VMC Operator Job Description Job Title: VMC Operator (Vertical Machining Centre Operator) Department: Production / Manufacturing Reports To: Production Supervisor / HOD Location: Coimbatore Job Summary The VMC Operator is responsible for setting up operating and maintaining Vertical Machining Centres to produce precision components as per engineering drawings and quality standards. This role includes machine setup tool selection offset adjustments and conducting inspections to ensure parts meet required tolerances. Key Responsibilities 1. Machine Setup & Operation Set up VMC machines with appropriate tools fixtures and workpieces. Operate VMC machines to manufacture components as per given programs and drawings. Load and unload parts safely and efficiently. Make minor adjustments to machine settings tool offsets and cutting parameters. 2. CNC Program Handling Interpret CNC programs (Fanuc/Siemens/Haas or others as applicable). Edit programs for minor corrections (e.g. feed speed tool changes) with approval. Understand G-codes and M-codes for smooth operation. 3. Quality Control & Inspection Read and interpret engineering drawings GD&T and work instructions. Use measuring instruments such as Vernier calipers micrometers height gauges bore gauges and thread gauges. Conduct first-piece inspection in-process inspection and final checks. Ensure all components meet specified tolerances and surface finish. 4. Maintenance & Safety Perform daily machine maintenance (cleaning lubrication coolant check). Report mechanical issues or tool wear to maintenance and supervisors. Follow safety procedures PPE guidelines and maintain a clean workspace. 5. Documentation & Reporting Maintain production logs inspection reports and tool usage records. Report production progress rejections and issues to supervisors. Ensure adherence to ISO/TS quality standards (if applicable). Skills & Qualifications Technical Skills Hands-on experience operating VMC machines (15 years depending on requirement). Knowledge of CNC controls (Fanuc / Siemens / Haas). Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings. Proficiency in using precision measuring instruments. Basic understanding of tooling cutting parameters and machining processes. Soft Skills Strong attention to detail. Good communication and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently and in a team. Time management and ability to meet production deadlines. Educational Requirements ITI / Diploma in Mechanical Fitter Machinist Tool & Die or related trade. Additional certification in CNC/VMC operation is an advantage. Work Environment Factory/Workshop environment May require standing for long hours Shift-based duty depending on company requirements Salary Range Experienced: Based on their relevant experience technical proficiency and prevailing industry standards
