Job Summary

West Island School (WIS) is seeking a skilled Workshop Technical Instructor to join our dynamic Design and Technology / Engineering department. Working alongside our lead Workshop Instructor and teaching staff this is a dedicated non-teaching technical support role focused on practical workshop operations machine maintenance material preparation and assisting students with safe tool operation during practical lessons. You will have experience of or willingness to learn a range of traditional and modern workshop equipment including CAM. The role requires the personal skills needed to help young people flourish and the organisation and fastidiousness required to maintain a range of equipment and prepare materials and resources.

This is a full-time permanent position starting from September 2026 with an option for a 6-week unpaid leave during the summer for interested candidates.

Role Summary

  • To demonstrate proper tool usage and assist students with safe hands-on fabrication techniques under the guidance of teaching staff

  • To proactively prepare materials set up machinery and maintain workshop readiness to ensure practical sessions run safely smoothly and efficiently

  • To maintain a safe fully equipped and well-organized workshop environment that enables practical skill development and technical problem-solving.

Responsibilities

  • Meticulously prepare and organize materials tools consumables and rooms for all classes including managing inventory and ordering tools/supplies as necessary.

  • Enforce strict workshop safety regulations and secure the environment through regular equipment checks servicing lubrication blade sharpening and detailed record-keeping per manufacturer standards.

  • Manage schedule and execute student work on laser cutters 3D printers and other CAM machinery; assist and guide students with machine operation during practical work.

  • Collaborate closely with teaching staff during practical sessions by providing hands-on technical guidance machine troubleshooting and safety oversight.

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge in CAD/CAM and technological innovations; construct custom jigs racks and workshop hardware to continuously improve space efficiency.

  • Continuously improve the workshop through inventory management constructing custom jigs/racks/hardware and seeking out professional development opportunities

  • Foster communication and technical knowledge-sharing across the ESF school network visiting other campuses to leverage physical resources best practices and workshop capabilities as required

  • Performs other duties and assumes accountabilities as apparent or as delegated in response to the schools operational needs

Reporting to: Head of Faculty

Requirements

Qualifications & Experience:

  • At least 2 3 years of experience and interest in design engineering construction model making or manufacturing

  • Certifications in areas like workshop safety or machinery operations would be an added advantage

  • Experience in workshop machinery and equipment electrical work or carpentry is recommended but not essential

  • Highly developed ICT skills and good workshop management skills

Abilities & Knowledge:

  • Excellent initiative interpersonal communication and organizational skills

  • Excellent general practical skills and problem-solving

  • A friendly and confident manner in relation to staff and students is essential.

  • Ability to be flexible prioritize workload to work independently and use initiative.

  • Spoken and written English is essential.

  • A reputation for being punctual reliable flexible resourceful hardworking and dedicated to the responsibilities that this post involves.

  • A desire to train learn and develop skills using CADCAM and CNC machinery.

  • Knowledge of workshop equipment machinery and hand tools and basic procedures health & safety and manufacturing techniques preferable
