Senior Credit & Surety Underwriter
Job Summary
We are looking for a Senior Credit & Surety Underwriter in Beijing. This is a senior technical underwriting role within SCORs CSPR Specialty Underwriting team with responsibility for the underwriting and development of trade credit and surety reinsurance business in China while contributing to SCOR Beijings client strategy through technical expertise market insight and selected client engagement.
SCORs Credit Surety Political Risk (CSPR) Specialty Department:
The Credit Surety Political Risk (CSPR) Underwriting teamconsists of 16 Underwriters andone CSPR Analyst based in Paris Zurich Miami NewYork Singapore Mumbai Beijing and Hong Kong. The team manages andoversees a portfolio generatingapproximately EUR700 million in premium income with marketsorganized across the Americas EMEA and Asia-Pacific.
Asia-Pacific contributes approximately 22% of SCORs CSPR premium income and isservedthroughSingaporeas the regional hub together withMumbai Beijing and Hong China SCOR CSPRholds aleading market position. Its clients include institutions thatprovideexport credit insurance to companiesagainst buyerpayment defaultinsolvency financialdistress andpolitical risks in thebuyers country such as currency inconvertibilityembargoes andcivil unrest. SCOR also reinsuressuretycompanies thatissue guarantees for thefulfilment oflegal or contractualobligations including tax-related commitments andconstruction contract performance.
TheAsia-Pacific portfolio is composed of approximately 74% Credit 20% Surety and 6% Single/Political Risk business primarily written through treaty reinsurance with some facultative placements. The team is also developing and launching digital trade credit insurance solutions to increase penetration among SMEs and further support global trade growth.
Mission:
As a member of SCORs CSPR Specialty Underwriting team based in Beijing the Senior Credit & Surety Underwriter China is responsible for underwriting developing and managing trade credit and surety reinsurance business in China in line with SCORs CSPR underwriting strategy appetite governance and profitability objectives.
The role is primarily a technical underwriting role. The jobholder is expected to assess negotiate and underwrite treaty and facultative opportunities analyse cedant portfolios and underlying risks contribute to pricing and risk selection decisions and monitor the performance of in-force business. The role requires the exercise of underwriting judgement within approved authorities governance frameworks and SCORs risk appetite.
Given the strategic importance of China for SCOR the role supports the execution of SCOR Beijings client strategy by providing CSPR expertise market insight and technical underwriting leadership.
The jobholder works closely with the Asia-Pacific CSPR regional management the wider CSPR Specialty Underwriting team and the China Reinsurance team to ensure alignment between CSPR underwriting priorities and SCORs broader client strategy in China.
Responsibilities
Key duties and responsibilities:
1. CSPR underwriting China
- Underwrite negotiate and manage trade credit and surety reinsurance business in China including treaty and facultative opportunities.
- Support the achievement of portfolio profitability growth and risk-adjusted return objectives for the China CSPR portfolio.
- Assess cedant portfolios product structures policy wording historical performance claims experience pricing assumptions and risk selection practices.
- Analyse financial sector country portfolio and accumulation risks to support underwriting decisions.
- Contribute to pricing discussions and underwriting recommendations in line with SCORs CSPR underwriting framework risk appetite and profitability objectives.
- Monitor in-force business claims trends recoveries and portfolio performance.
- Conduct portfolio reviews technical audits and underwriting discussions with cedants to support disciplined portfolio development.
- Identify opportunities to develop profitable CSPR business in China including selected treaty facultative and product development initiatives.
2. Client and market engagement in China
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with cedants brokers and other relevant market stakeholders.
- Act as a local technical point of contact for CSPR matters in Beijing in close coordination with the Asia-Pacific CSPR regional management and the China Reinsurance team.
- Contribute to SCOR Beijings client strategy by bringing CSPR expertise market insights and technical content to selected client discussions.
- Promote SCORs CSPR capabilities through client meetings seminars workshops conferences and other market engagement initiatives.
- Stay abreast of market regulatory economic and competitive developments in China and share relevant insights with the CSPR and China Reinsurance teams.
Represent SCORs CSPR Specialty line in China and contribute to strengthening SCORs market position and reputation with clients brokers and other key stakeholders.
3. Collaboration and internal contribution
- Work closely with the CSPR Specialty Underwriting team the Asia-Pacific regional team the China Reinsurance team pricing actuaries legal claims finance and other relevant internal stakeholders.
- Support the development and execution of the CSPR China underwriting plan in alignment with validated regional and global priorities.
- Identify and leverage SCORs internal expertise to differentiate the CSPR value proposition for selected Chinese clients.
- Contribute to knowledge sharing within CSPR and across SCOR on China market trends cedant needs portfolio developments and emerging risks.
4. Digital Trade Credit and Innovation
- Contribute to the development of digital trade credit initiatives in China including SMART Credit and similar programmes where relevant to SCORs CSPR strategy.
- Monitor digital market developments product innovation regulatory changes and competitive dynamics to identify potential growth opportunities.
- Support use cases and initiatives with strategic partners clients and internal teams in China and where appropriate across Asia-Pacific.
Qualifications
Required experience & competencies:
- Bachelors Degree ideally in economics finance risk management mathematics business administration or a related discipline.
- Significant experience in trade credit surety corporate banking insurance reinsurance or a closely related field with a strong understanding of credit risk portfolio analysis underwriting discipline and client relationship management. Prior experience in the Chinese insurance reinsurance banking or financial services market would be a strong advantage.
- Strong analytical judgement commercial awareness and technical underwriting discipline. The candidate should be able to assess complex risks challenge assumptions formulate clear underwriting recommendations and communicate effectively with senior internal and external stakeholders.
- The candidate should be autonomous organised rigorous and comfortable operating in a matrix environment working closely with both the CSPR Specialty Underwriting team and the China Reinsurance team.
- Strong interpersonal negotiation presentation and relationship management skills are essential.
- Fluency in Mandarin Chinese and English both written and spoken is required to engage with local market clients.
