The Opportunity

The Student Success Advisor provides comprehensive student-centered advising to support students. The Team achieves student success and retention through proactive data-informed advising practices including monitoring student progress identifying students at risk and providing timely outreach and intervention. The Advisor also connects students with appropriate campus resources supports informed academic decision-making and collaborates with campus partners to enhance the overall student experience and support students in achieving their educational goals. This position reports to the Director - Student Success and Retention.

Responsibilities

General Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate and confidential advising files and records.
  • Maintain current knowledge of academic programs policies and regulations to ensure accurate consistent and high-quality advising.
  • Contribute to retention and student success using advising data and trends.
  • Collaborate with other departments to support student success retention recruitment and transition initiatives and participate in related events.
  • Lead or support training and knowledge-sharing initiatives within the Student Success Team to promote consistent and high-quality advising practices.

Integrated Team Responsibilities

  • Provide advising to students at all stages of their degree program through individual appointments group sessions video conferencing and online communication while promoting student confidence independence and self-advocacy.
  • Guide students in academic planning (i.e. course selection program and degree requirements transfer credits and academic regulations) which may require assistance with course registration academic forms and navigation of university systems.
  • Act as an accessible first point of contact for students responding to a wide range of inquiries and providing holistic advising support (i.e. including general guidance on financial aid scholarships and bursaries loans support services internships career development study permits exchange and co-curricular opportunities) while connecting students to specialized services and resources.
  • Support student retention through proactive data-informed advising practices including monitoring student progress identifying students at-risk conducting timely outreach and intervention and maintaining regular contact with assigned students with at least one check-in per semester.
  • Oversee student employees including hiring training and supervision when applicable ensuring the delivery of high-quality peer support and student programming.
  • Coordinate pre-departure communication arrival orientation and transitional programming including workshops on student success skills.
  • Perform other related duties and support team initiatives as required.

What youll need

Qualifications

  • Minimum of an undergraduate degree.
  • 2-4 years of demonstrated experience in a student-facing role within a post-secondary advising or client service environment.
  • Strong understanding of or demonstrated ability to learn university policies academic regulations program requirements and student services.
  • Proven ability to build relationships with diverse student populations and provide inclusive student-centered support.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) with the ability to explain complex information clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with professionalism and discretion and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team contributing to shared goals and initiatives.
  • Demonstrated digital fluency including experience with Microsoft Office 365 Customer Relationship Management Systems and student information systems (e.g. Colleague or similar platforms).
  • Experience supporting individuals in distress or navigating complex personal or academic challenges.
