The role
We are seeking a Technical Officer in Mechanical Engineering to support the activities of the Optical Technologies team within the Clean Energy Innovation (CEI) Research Centre. The successful candidate will share our core values of integrity excellence respect and creativity.
The NRCs Clean Energy Innovation Research Centre delivers cutting-edge technologies to Canadas energy industries. Our world-class expertise bridges the gap between scientific discoveries and industrial applications helping Canadian industry advance clean energy innovations and industrial decarbonization.
Within the Optical Technologies Team you will contribute to the development of optical spectroscopic and ultrasonic measurement technologies systems and instruments designed for material analysis and process monitoring.
From proof of concept to industrial demonstration you will be responsible for the design and optimization of complex laboratory setups and instrument prototypes requiring precise mechanical thermal and optical alignment robust enclosures suitable for demanding industrial environments and efficient integration of mechanical electronic and optical subsystems. The ability to transform laboratoryscale concepts into durable fielddeployable prototypes distinguishes this role and strengthens NRCs capabilities in advanced sensor and instrumentation technologies for insitu and realtime measurement.
Your work will also include technical documentation of experiments maintenance and upkeep of laboratory equipment and management of supplies and instrument procurement required for ongoing projects. You will take part in design reviews team and project meetings training activities and health and safety initiatives contributing to the smooth operation and collaboration within the group.

Screening criteria
Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:
Education
University degree or college diploma in mechanical engineering or other discipline related to this position.

Experience
- Significant experience in in computeraided mechanical design (SolidWorks or Inventor) of components subsystems or complete designing robust systems suited for industrial or harsh environments.
- Significant experience in the assembly and mechanical adjustment of systems and instrument prototypes.
- Basic experience conducting experimental work in R&D laboratories involving optics and ultrasonics.
- Experience collaborating within multidisciplinary teams and contributing to the transfer of technologies from the laboratory to fieldable applications.

For a Reliability Status verification of background information over a period of 5 years is required.

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:
Technical competencies
- Excellent command of computer aided mechanical design (SolidWorks Inventor or equivalent software).
- Knowledge of mechanical and thermal analysis including finite element analysis (FEA).
- Knowledge of high precision manufacturing and assembly tolerances.
- Understanding of the principles and use of optical and ultrasonic sensors.
- Strong skills in manufacturing processes including 3D printing machining and assembly.
- Knowledge of standards and best practices in the design of scientific or industrial instruments.

Compensation
From $83435to $107838 per annum.
