Our central role includes managing the provincial power grid in real-time overseeing and evolving Ontarios electricity market engaging with government municipalities and Indigenous communities and planning for Ontarios future electricity needs. The Supervisor Nuclear Contracts is accountable to the Director Nuclear Development. The Supervisor will oversee the team responsible for the management of IESOs nuclear contracts and agreements that require technical financial and operational oversight.
Central to this work will be the monitoring reviewing validating and reporting on the progress and adherence to obligations in the refurbishment contract between the IESO and Bruce Power to ensure ratepayer value from the largest operating nuclear generating station in North addition the team will also be responsible for managing existing and potential future agreements related to new build nuclear facilities in the province. This includes overseeing contracts that will be supporting the Bruce C project potentially the first major new nuclear build in Canada in over 30 years.
The Supervisor is expected to be an experienced professional with an understanding of the nuclear industry and a combination of technical/engineering finance project management commercial principles and relationship management experience. A limited amount of travel to the Bruce Power site may be required.
What youll do
In a typical day you willoversee Bruce Powers contractual obligations related to refurbishment asset management and future development projects while ensuring compliance with key agreements and performance commitments. The role includes attending executive and project oversight meetings reviewing technical operational and financial reports and conducting due diligence on project costs asset management plans and scope changes to identify risks and protect ratepayer interests. The supervisor prepares progress reports for senior management manages relationships with Bruce Power and other stakeholders and provides technical and commercial expertise to support contract administration and dispute addition they lead and develop a team through coaching performance management and onboarding activities while ensuring contract counterparties adhere to project management operational and engineering standards. The position requires balancing contract oversight stakeholder engagement technical analysis and people leadership to support the successful delivery and operation of major nuclear projects.
More specifically in this role youll make a meaningful impact by contributing to the IESO team and supporting the electricity needs of the province through delivering on the following key aspects:
Contract Management:
- Manage contractual obligations for the Amended and Restated Bruce Power Refurbishment Implementation Agreement as well as development agreements for Bruce C
- Attend and observe Bruce Power refurbishment asset management and project management oversight meetings
- Prepare periodic progress and observation reports for IESO management
- Track development and oversee due diligence on refurbishment and Lifetime Asset Management Plan costs scope and schedules
- Ensure operational covenants are tracked and monitored and report on relevant performance obligations
- Oversee review and assessment of notices from contract counterparties including Force Majeure Notices
Supervision:
- Responsible for hiring onboarding supervising coaching short-term development planning and performance evaluation for staff
Relationship Management:
- Maintain excellent business relationships with Bruce Power to proactively identify and manage contract issues
- Manage on site relationships with executive and senior site staff in a professional and independent manner
Technical Oversight:
- Ensure scope of work proposed or undertaken by Bruce Power is performed in accordance with Good Engineering and Operating Practices as per contract provisions
- Act as technical expert and provide first level answers to any technical questions raised by IESO management
- Facilitate and support external technical experts when required
- Perform due diligence on operational or technical strategies proposed by Bruce Power
Commercial Oversight:
- Support IESO management with any contract or payment disputes
- Review and assess proposals to resolve disputes and other ongoing issues formulate proposals or counter-proposals and negotiate fair and reasonable resolutions
- Participate in meetings with Bruce Powers external vendors (engineering procurement and construction) and review contracts
- Facilitate and support independent auditors when required
- Monitor Bruce Powers adherence to established project management guidelines
- Monitor facility performance to verify facilities are being operated in a prudent manner
Role Requirements

To succeed in this role youll need:
- Must possess an undergraduate university degree in engineering or alternatively must possess a degree in business finance or economics with a strong understanding of engineering and/or possess strong technical nuclear expertise
- A post-graduate degree in engineering or finance is preferred
- A professional designation including one or more of . PMP CPA CA or CFA is preferred
- Must possess nuclear industry-specific knowledge training or commensurate experience
- Generally 8 10 years of experience with generation technology in a technical and commercial capacity is expected to apply the required discretion to carry out the relationship management technical analysis and contract management responsibilities of the position. Critical knowledge gained through experience includes:
- Nuclear industry understanding of engineering/technical legal and/or economic aspects of nuclear generation especially with CANDU systems and equipment
- Commercial expertise experience in contract management procurement project management audit and/or negotiations
- Ontario electricity sector knowledge of the Ontario electricity sector
- Team leader experience with managing motivating and coaching staff including building strong performing teams
- Project management experience managing large complex projects with competing priorities and many stakeholders
- Construction - a good working knowledge of generation facility construction/refurbishment techniques schedules and processes
- Facility operations working knowledge with operations of nuclear and generation stations
- Financial analysis a sound knowledge in the analysis of company or project finances
- Relationship management Experience with dealing with complex organizations building professional relationships with senior staff in an independent manner;
- Communications excellent oral written and presentation skills are a must
