Senior Socio-Economic Specialist

My client a 100% Canadian-owned environmental and regulatory advisory firm supporting major resource development projects across Canada is seeking a Senior Socio-Economic Specialist to join their Human Environment and Indigenous Relations practice. This is an opportunity to work alongside senior practitioners supporting complex projects across mining infrastructure energy natural resources and community development sectors throughout Canada.

This role is well-suited for a senior-level professional who thrives at the intersection of socio-economic assessment Indigenous and community engagement regulatory strategy and project leadership. The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering technically strong culturally informed and strategically aligned socio-economic work while helping shape the continued growth of the practice.

Responsibilities:
Socio-Economic Assessment Monitoring & Technical Leadership:

• Lead socio-economic baseline studies impact assessments monitoring initiatives and technical reporting for a variety of projects across multiple sectors.
• Assess project-related impacts on communities labour force housing healthcare education infrastructure regional economies and community wellbeing.
• Develop socio-economic management plans mitigation strategies and long-term monitoring programs.
• Synthesize qualitative and quantitative information into clear defensible recommendations reporting and regulatory documentation.
• Conduct QA/QC reviews of technical reports assessments recommendations and project deliverables.
• Integrate Gender-Based Analysis Plus (GBA) considerations into socio-economic assessments and monitoring programs.
• Provide strategic guidance related to socio-economic risk engagement strategy and project approvals.
• Support Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs) Environmental Management Plans (EMPs) and Cumulative Effects Assessments (CEAs).
• Ensure alignment with applicable federal provincial territorial and Indigenous regulatory requirements.
• Monitor evolving socio-economic policies regulatory expectations legislation and industry best practices.

Indigenous & Community Engagement:

• Build and maintain strong respectful long-term relationships with Indigenous Nations stakeholders community organizations clients and government agencies.
• Support Indigenous-led socio-economic frameworks planning initiatives and assessment processes.
• Integrate Indigenous Knowledge traditional land use considerations and community priorities into project planning and socio-economic assessments.
• Organize and facilitate engagement sessions workshops consultation meetings and community discussions.
• Apply culturally appropriate and trauma-informed engagement approaches and best practices.
• Mentor and support Indigenous and community participants involved in baseline or assessment programs.
• Strengthen long-term relationships with Indigenous Nations stakeholders and clients through collaboration transparency and ongoing communication.

Project Management Collaboration & Business Development:

• Manage project scope schedules budgets deliverables risks and team coordination across multiple concurrent projects.
• Lead multidisciplinary collaboration across environmental regulatory Indigenous engagement and human environment teams.
• Monitor project progress and ensure successful delivery of project milestones and technical deliverables.
• Contribute to proposal writing strategic planning work planning and business development initiatives.
• Support the growth and expansion of the firms Human Environment practice through technical leadership collaboration and client relationship development.
• Represent the firm professionally with clients Indigenous Nations regulators and external stakeholders.

Leadership Mentorship & Professional Development:

• Build strong working relationships with internal project teams clients Indigenous Nations and regulatory agencies.
• Become a trusted senior advisor on socio-economic and human environment projects.
• Demonstrate strong technical writing communication analytical organizational and problem-solving skills across multiple concurrent projects.
• Mentor junior and intermediate staff and provide QA/QC support to interdisciplinary teams.
• Support the professional development and growth of junior staff through mentorship collaboration and technical guidance.
• Contribute to a collaborative high-performing team environment while working effectively in a remote setting.
• Independently lead complex socio-economic assessment and engagement programs from planning through execution and delivery.

Experience:

• Bachelors or masters degree in Social Sciences Indigenous Studies Economics Environmental Studies Planning Geography or a related discipline.
• Approximately 5 years of relevant experience in socio-economic assessment community engagement Indigenous relations or human environment consulting.
• Experience supporting resource development infrastructure energy mining transportation or government-related projects.
• Strong understanding of environmental assessment and regulatory processes in Canada.
• Experience managing project budgets schedules scope and technical deliverables.
• Demonstrated experience leading engagement initiatives and working collaboratively with Indigenous communities and stakeholders.
• Excellent technical writing facilitation and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently in a remote environment while collaborating effectively within multidisciplinary teams.

Assets:

• Understanding of UNDRIP DRIPA FPIC OCAP and Indigenous rights frameworks.
• Experience applying trauma-informed engagement approaches.
• Experience supporting Indigenous-led initiatives or partnerships.
• Willingness to travel periodically to project sites and remote communities.
• Valid drivers licence.
