Salary Range: SP6 $164475 - $193500 per year. The final compensation for this position will be determined based on individual factors including education qualifications experience and internal equity.
Senior Advisor AI Governance and Security Strategy
The Opportunity
Artificial intelligence (AI) is already at work across the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) and we are building the strategy that keeps that use safe and secure. As our Senior Advisor AI Governance and Security Strategy you will own that strategy: the decision rights the AI Register and the operating model that determine how AI is approved and used and how it is monitored and measured across the organization. You will shape how we govern a multi-vendor AI estate spanning Microsoft Azure Foundry Fabric Microsoft 365 and Copilot Anthropic OpenAI Google Gemini Workday and Esri ArcGIS. This is a strategy and advisory role; you define what good looks like and work through the security and data governance teams that own enforcement.
You will join a new Digital Enablement and Artificial Intelligence team whose work reaches the AI Steering Committee and the Executive Leadership Team so your advice will shape decisions from day one. What your day-to-day will look like:
Own the strategy for governing and securing AI at the AER defining the decision rights the AI Register and the supporting processes that frame how AI is approved and used aligned to recognized frameworks such as ISO/IEC 42001 and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework.
Define the metrics and processes that monitor and measure AI across the organization including oversight of models and agents and the data protection and identity signals available from tools such as Microsoft Purview and Microsoft Entra ID.
Define the operating model for AI tools answering who may use a tool what they may use it for and where how and when they may use it and establish cost caps and quotas supported by FinOps processes that keep AI consumption predictable and tied to value.
Maintain a platform-neutral view across the AI estate advising on which capabilities to adopt where controls are required and how to avoid purchasing the same capability twice.
Partner with business branches the training group and corporate communications to design training and communication that build understanding of AI risks and responsible ethical use.
Contribute to the enterprise AI strategy and roadmap and report on the organizations AI posture through a quarterly dashboard to the AI Steering Committee and the Executive Leadership Team.
What were looking for in you:
A Bachelors degree in Business Public Administration Environmental Science Engineering Information Technology or a related field. Post-graduate education in AI data management or digital transformation is considered an asset.
10 years of experience in information security governance or risk strategy including experience governing or assuring AI or machine learning systems.
Deep knowledge of AI governance and security frameworks such as ISO/IEC 42001 and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework and the ability to turn them into clear processes and decision rights.
Strong command of the controls that monitor and measure AI including tools such as Microsoft Purview and Microsoft Entra ID and working knowledge of FinOps consumption controls across multiple vendors.
An influence-first working style with excellent communication skills and the ability to educate the business on responsible AI use while working through the teams that own enforcement.
CISSP CISM ISO/IEC 42001 IAPP AIGP or Microsoft security or AI certifications are assets as is experience in the energy industry or a regulated environment.
