Job Summary
Position Title: Safe Steps Program Volunteers (2)
Reports To: Haven House Residential Manager
Summary of Role:
Safe Steps is a psychoeducational group (evidence-based therapy group) that supports caregivers to discover ways to support their children in dealing with emotions repairing attachment and building self-esteem and resilience. There is one caregivers group and three age-based childrens groups. Safe Steps is open to families that are not currently in crisis and is always focused on the impact of domestic violence on children.
Time Commitment
Monday evenings from 5:30-8:00pm for eight-week sessions that occur three times per year. Volunteer position starts in September 2026.

Support during this Position:
The Clinical Support Worker will provide primary support for these volunteers. Secondary support will be provided by the Haven House Residential Manager.
Tasks and Duties
Support with set-up and clean-up before and after group
Assist participants to enter and exit the building before and after group
Have a presence alongside facilitators for the duration of the group during pre-planned activities and assist where extra support is most needed (ie. Childrens group).
Skills and Qualifications
Strong interpersonal skills in building positive relationships is essential
Strong communication skills is essential
Time Management skills are preferred
Ability to obtain Vulnerable sector police record check
18 years or older required
Experience working with children and/or experience with group facilitation is preferred
About the Safe Steps Program
The group is for those who have experienced domestic violence as well as their children who have witnessed abuse in their the Safe Steps groups we are working to support families in their healing journey.
Each week the families come together to complete a shared activity before breaking off into separate groups for parents and age-appropriate childrens groups. Each group engages in developmentally appropriate material of the same overall topic as the other groups.
This program is run by the Womens Crisis Services of Waterloo Region
Who Are We Womens Crisis Services of Waterloo Region (WCSWR*) provides emergency shelter to women and children fleeing abusive relationships. We operate two shelters: Anselma House in Kitchener and Haven House in Cambridge. Our facilities operate on a 24/7 basis and we pride ourselves in being more than shelter. We also offer a robust region-wide outreach support program which supports families who are experiencing or have experienced domestic violence. We believe that everyone deserves to live a life free from abuse.
