The Opportunity:

The Residential Worker Eveningprovides on-site support to youth and youth with children residing in a transitional housing program. This role focuses on supporting daily stability safety and household functioning while contributing to a calm respectful and structured living environment.

Working within a trauma-informed culturally responsive and harm reduction framework the Residential Worker supports residents (ages 1630) who may be experiencing homelessness instability or crisis-related challenges. Evening staff play a key role in engagement basic support crisis response within protocol and continuity of care into the overnight period.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Resident Support & Monitoring

  • Provide a supportive respectful and non-judgmental presence during overnight hours;
  • Conduct wellness and safety checks including for youth with children;
  • Respond to resident needs including providing immediate emotional support and de-escalation as required;
  • Support a safe calm and structured overnight environment;
  • Provide supportive engagement and positive role-modelling to encourage stability and routine.

Safety & Crisis Response

  • Monitor the premises and respond to safety concerns as they arise;
  • Respond to crises including conflict distress or urgent situations;
  • Follow established protocols including contacting emergency services when required;
  • Complete incident reports and documentation according to program policy.

Program Operations & Household Support

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation (shift logs incident reports resident notes);
  • Support intake transitions or discharges during overnight hours as directed;
  • Ensure adherence to house guidelines and program expectations;
  • Perform household duties including cleaning shared/common areas laundry support and maintaining supplies;
  • Support youth in daily living activities including meal preparation with and for residents and participation in household routines;
  • Maintain a safe clean and welcoming residential environment;
  • Complete required check-ins in accordance with working-alone policies.
Communication & Team Collaboration

  • Participate in shift handovers and communicate relevant updates to staff;
  • Work collaboratively with the broader team to ensure continuity of support;
  • Attend team meetings and required training sessions.

QUALIFIED CANDIDATES WILL POSSESS:

Education & Experience

  • Diploma in a related field (e.g. Social Services Child & Youth Care) or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • 1 years experience working with youth and/or vulnerable populations.
Skills & Knowledge

  • Understanding of trauma-informed practice harm reduction and cultural safety;
  • Knowledge of community resources in Surrey and surrounding areas;
  • Ability to respond to crisis situations within established protocols;
  • Strong interpersonal communication and documentation skills;
  • Ability to work independently during overnight shifts;
  • Ability to work respectfully with diverse populations;
  • Lived experience relevant to the population served is considered an asset;
  • Intermediate/Standard First Aid with CPR-C and AED (or willingness to obtain);
  • Food Safe certificate is required;
  • WHMIS certificate is required;
  • Naloxone trained (or willingness to obtain).

Working Conditions

  • Work involves supporting individuals experiencing instability and crisis-related situations;
  • Moderate to high-stress environment at times;
  • Requires monitoring of safety household dynamics and resident wellbeing;
  • Ability to respond effectively to emergencies and interruptions.
