Registered Practical Nurse Withdrawal Management Centre

The Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) is a regulated health care professional who is accountable and responsible for providing quality patient focused nursing care to patients who are identified as less complex demonstrate more predictable outcomes and are at lower risk for negative outcomes in the Withdrawal Management Centre. As part of the inter-professional health care team the RPN will practice according to the nursing practice expectations set by Osler the regulatory practice standards of the College of Nurses and the legislative requirements set by the Regulated Health Professions Act.

Withdrawal Management Centre provides assistance with voluntary withdrawal from alcohol and/or other substances for clients who are under the influence of these substances and/or in withdrawal or otherwise in crisis directly related to these substances. Withdrawal Management Center provides comprehensive inter-professional holistic outpatient addictions care for clients and their families affected by substance use generally alcohol and opioid use disorders.

Accountabilities:

• Safe nursing practice in all aspects of the nursing process: assessment individualized treatment planning implementation evaluation and effective transition of patient care
• Professional patient-centered care to ensure patient safety and physiological and psychological well-being
• Providing care in a compassionate and caring manner within a diverse cultural environment
• Practicing according to the infection control and prevention measures
• Responding to emergency situations by recognizing changes in patients health status and consulting appropriately when necessary using transfer of accountability principles
• Providing health teaching to patients and families including thorough discharge instructions to ensure the continuity of care in the community
• Working collaboratively within interprofessional team including but not limited to Nurse Practitioners Addiction Counsellors Addiction Crisis Workers etc.
• Regularly updates professional knowledge through educational events workshops and profession related reading and training.
• Follows proper reporting procedures for actual or potential accidents and/or incidents to ensure follow-up and prevention.
• Carries out Nurse Practitioner and/or Physician orders accurately within the RPN scope of practice.

Qualifications :

• Recent experience within the last five years with a minimum of two years of addiction specific experience
• Knowledge of crisis and suicide assessment and intervention required
• Knowledge of Mental Health Act
• Ability to recognize and intervene in clinical settings and de-escalate psychosocial situations where management of behaviours are required
• Experience in CIWA (Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment for Alcohol) and COWS (Clinical Opiate Withdrawal Scale) screening assessment protocols
• Knowledge of controlled substances safe handling medication administration and disposal with RPN scope of practice

Core competencies:

• Current registration and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario with no limitations to practice
• Sound knowledge of nursing theory process and application including the assessment planning implementation and evaluation of nursing care which are responsibilities to the nursing profession
• BCLS required
• Medication Administration certificate and patient assessment course required for RPNs graduating prior to 2005
• Possesses knowledge of Opioid Agonist Therapy including Methadone Buprenorphine (i.e. Suboxone) and slow-release oral morphine treatment
• Possesses knowledge of anti-craving medication for substance use disorders.
• Possesses the ability to work in a harm reduction context.
• Possesses ability to complete suicide risk assessments
• Experience with group facilitation is an asset
• Demonstrated excellent interpersonal communication problem-solving conflict-resolution and decision-making skills required
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of an inter-professional team
• Demonstrated knowledge of patient and family-centered care
• Demonstrated experience with patient and family health teaching required
• Demonstrated leadership and facilitation skills required
• Demonstrated excellent customer service organizational and critical-thinking skills required
• Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and professional development as it applies to the profession and related field
• Demonstrated knowledge of addiction specific community resources
• Demonstrated ability to work in a stressful environment and ability to navigate challenging client behaviours.
• Exemplary clinical practice within an inter-professional team to develop appropriate strategies for patient care
• Ability to prioritize patient care needs and make autonomous decisions
• Excellent physical assessment skills required
• Ability to promote a healthy work environment and practice excellent client safety guidelines
• Knowledge and understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act

• May be required to travel and work between all Osler sites
• Excellent attendance punctuality and work record

Additional Information :

Hours: Currently Evenings/Nights 8 and 12 hours including weekends and statutory holidays (subject to change in accordance with operational requirements)

Salary:
Minimum: $36.08 per hour
Maximum: $39.02 per hour
