Job Summary
The Projects Coordinator Research (PC) provides provide technical expertise and project management for a lab that specializes in community-centred health services research and knowledge translation advance equity quality and respect in perinatal services. The PC will be responsible for coordination of research and knowledge implementation projects in the area of reproductive health and justice. The Projects Coordinator will support the PI and Research Associate by implementing best practices for organization and management of research project activities data management data analysis and data integrity at the Birth Place Lab (BPL). The PC will support the Equity Strategist for activities by implementing best practices for equity inclusive excellence in BPL research and KT activities including community engagement participatory action research and knowledge translation. The PC interacts and liaises with academic and community-based researchers policy makers administrators community partners external research partners Division of Midwifery faculty and staff UBC units (such as Research Services and Ethics) Womens Health Research Institute or other key stakeholders globally.

Organizational Status

The Birth Place Lab (BPL) a research unit within the Department of Family Practice facilitates transdisciplinary community-based participatory action research aimed at improving access to high quality perinatal services from preconception to early parenting. The BPL supports multi-national multi-stakeholder teams as they collaborate on quantitative qualitative and mixed methods provincial national and international research projects and hosts trainees from midwifery medicine public health and other disciplines. The BPL internal team includes the PI Research Associate Administrative and Operations Manager Equity Strategist Knowledge Translation Specialists Research and Communications staff.

The BPL currently holds several grants that support research and knowledge translation on person-centered and respectful care for childbearing families especially those from historically marginalized populations. These novel research projects are poised to inform health policy system and service leaders about pragmatic community-responsive modes of increasing accountability for rights-based high quality health services for childbearing families. Current research studies are funded by various Tri-Council agencies and foundations and are institutionally supported through the Division of Midwifery Department of Family Practice Faculty of Medicine the Womens Health Research Institute at BC Womens Hospital and Child and Family Research Institute. The core research team is located in Vancouver and transdisciplinary research and community partners are spread across North America Europe Africa India the UK South America and Oceania.

Work Performed

The Projects Coordinator Research is responsible for implementing strategies and initiatives to expand BPL capacity for equity informed participatory action research based on the priorities of the Principal Investigator and the research program. They will oversee research project plans and activities oversee and/or enact communications with community partners trainees and research partners; organize meetings related to the main project and sub-projects; enact data management and data sharing protocols participate in development of grants project reports manuscripts and presentations; contribute to community-facing data display; support student research assistants and scholars; track timelines and deliverables and other research administration activities.

Project Management

• In consultation with PI and community leadership liaise with community-based research partners to plan implement and coordinate study protocols to meet deliverables;
• Manages communications timelines meetings and project work plans in collaboration with the BPL team community partners and in accordance with principles of community based participatory research.
• Oversees the implementation of research projects to ensure that ethical requirements UBC ORS OCAP and equity principles and requirements of external research sites are met.
• Collaborate with other BPL staff to oversee ongoing project management planning facilitation and evaluation of project activities.
• Support PI and KT Specialists with effective and efficient coordination of KT events and implementation activities.
• Ensures compliance with external funding grants and the policies and agreements with the University of British Columbia.
• Maintains research project records and generate mid term and end of term reports for funders.
• Creates and coordinates project plans with external research and implementation partners
  • Manages and updates contacts and project status for research collaborators trainees and early career scholars including teams that use the measures and outputs of the lab

Communications and Engagement

• Respond to inquiries and requests from Community Partners media and the general public about the research tools knowledge translation events and implementation activities.
• Work in partnership and consultation with community Steering Councils PI and Co-Investigators to facilitate community engagement
• Coordinate documentation and communication related to exploratory meetings with external research partner organizations and ongoing community Steering Council meetings.
• Support Equity Strategist to engage key community partners and NGOs that serve racialized marginalized underrepresented and Indigenous childbearing populations.
• Build and maintain relationships with Regional Recruitment Coordinators and Community Leads at each data collection and/or implementation location.
• Coordinate training events that support engagement of community members in research (ethics data management analysis interpretation knowledge translation development)

Research

• Liaise with and support community partners and clinician leaders through the data collection interpretation and knowledge translation phases for active projects.
  • Responsible for data management and data analysis as directed by the PI RA and Co-investigators
  • Be accountable for the integrity of the data including data organization data cleaning fraud detection protocols security of the data and ethical procedures.
  • Facilitates sharing of datasets with external stakeholders; helps develop data sharing agreements and communicates with stakeholders about this process
  • Drafts ethics applications and provisos
  • Helps to develop surveys proofs and uploads them on Qualtrics;
  • Generates data reports and data display tools

• Supports grant application submissions to major funding agencies (e.g. CIHR) and smaller foundations (e.g. Vancouver Foundation);

• Supports PI Co-PI and Research Associate and graduate trainees in preparing manuscripts articles abstracts posters and presentations for academic journals and conferences
• Maintains research study records including documents and communications in accordance with UBC and funding agencies
  • Will perform other research support related duties as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The PC makes professional decisions and recommendations on all aspects of their work. The PC is responsible for the maintaining the research project plans for multiple grants partnerships and community engagement initiatives. Project organization is critical for the budget management reputation and integrity of research projects. Failure to maintain professional judgement respectful relationships confidentiality and/or security of personal information and study data could jeopardize the reputation of the PI the BPL the successful delivery of research studies and working relationships with community partners and collaborators. Correct accurate timely and appropriate completion of tasks is of utmost importance as mistakes and inappropriate action could result in the loss of grant funding and credibility of the Division of Midwifery Department of Family Practice and Faculty of Medicine.

Supervision Received

The PC reports to and receives general direction from the PI and Operations and Administration Manager of the BPL and project specific guidance from the Research Associate Equity Strategist and co-investigators.

The PC will independently develop work plans and timetables and to exercise judgment and initiative on duties; will regularly update the PI Co-PIs research collaborators and pertinent members of the BPL and Department as needed on progress.

Work will be reviewed against the overall strategic plan and project deliverables and objectives.

Supervision Given
The PC provides general support and direction to Regional Recruitment Partners Community Steering Council members and research assistants from the community and at UBC including undergraduate and graduate trainees; and provides guidance to community leads and BPL staff as needed to ensure that the goals of all projects and initiatives are met in a timely inclusive respectful and efficient manner.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Undergraduate or graduate degree in a relevant discipline psychology gender race and sexual studies public health health services midwifery medicine community planning sociology etc. preferred.
• Three or more years of experience supporting applied health research in an academic environment or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
• Knowledge of research on respectful care anti-oppression and equity in maternity health services and perinatal research.
• Familiarity with and experience with implementation of anti-racist and anti-oppression methods for community engagement research and knowledge translation.
• Knowledge of OCAP principles for respectful and decolonized research methods.
• Ability to successfully foster and maintain relationships with diverse external stakeholders.
• Experience with project management systems tools and methods eg Microsoft Planner
• Demonstrated skills in research project and data management
• Demonstrated competency in academic or technical writing and communication.
• Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines. Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.
• Familiarity and competency with data collection and analysis software eg. Qualtrics RedCap Nvivo SPSS R Stata
• Ability to effectively use Excel Outlook PowerPoint Word at an intermediate level.
• Knowledge of administrative and regulatory regulations and processes for research conducted in a university setting including ethical requirements.
• Ability to analyze problems identify key information and issues and effectively resolve.
• Ability to deal with a diversity of people in a calm courteous and effective manner.
