This position plays a key role in program development direct programming and community building. It supports the Manager of Camping to maintain a safe and inclusive community at camp in all seasons. It is responsible for assisting in all aspects of the camping program and ensuring inclusivity and I.D.E.A. goals are met.

ABOUT YWCA TORONTO CAMP TAPAWINGO
Camp Tapawingo is a summer camp near Parry Sound which offers carefully developed programming in a relaxed camp setting on beautiful Georgian Bay. Girls and gender diverse youth thrive as they develop leadership skills gain confidence and embark on new experiences and fun adventures. YWCA Toronto is committed to increasing Inclusion Diversity Equity and Accessibility (IDEA) within Camp Tapawingo programs and services. We aspire to be a camp representative of Torontos diverse community and to provide a welcoming space where camp participants families counsellors-in-training and staff feel safe and valued. We provide financial assistance to help remove barriers for girls and gender diverse youth to access the outdoors.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist in planning implementing and evaluating camp activities and schedules;
  • Ensure programs align with IDEA goals and provide diverse inclusive experiences;
  • Coordinate camper arrivals/departures special events and outside group programming;
  • Prepare training materials and support staff development;
  • Act as lead in the Managers absence living on-site during camp season and responding to emergencies including urgent health concerns accidents and distressed campers;
  • Promote camp programs recruit and help to interview seasonal staff and prepare hiring packages;
  • Assist with oversight support and development of the supervision of Activity Heads counsellors and seasonal staff;
  • Assist in managing budgets relating to program petty cash and support service/equipment purchases;
  • Collaborate with outreach staff external organizations and partners (e.g. Lifesaving Society Ontario Camps Association).
QUALIFICATIONS
  • In-depth knowledge of an academic discipline normally acquired through an undergraduate degree in Child and Youth Work Social Work Education Recreation degree or other relevant educational degree (Cases for Equivalency will be considered);
  • 3-5 years of directly related experience at an overnight childrens camp at a senior staff level;
  • Full Ontario drivers license is required;
  • Experience working with youth and vulnerable populations including evidence of strong cultural competence and demonstrated commitment to working with diverse communities and work environments;
  • Advanced knowledge of operating an overnight camp with physical wilderness and leadership activities for girls and gender-diverse youth;
  • Knowledge of girls and gender-diverse youth programing and access and equity issues are required;
  • Ability to work well within a team and independently including demonstrating strong leadership collaborative team-building and problem-solving skills;
  • Ability to pass their National Lifeguard and/or Bronze Cross;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Ability to learn and pass the Water Treatment Certificate and Food Handlers Certificate;
  • Proficiency in current computer applications is necessary e.g. Microsoft Office Teams/Zoom Outlook.

Note: This is a full-time position with some evenings and weekend work required during the winter. There is a requirement to live on site from April to October. Extensive overtime is accumulated in the summer due to the 24/7 nature of the job. This overtime will be compensated by working a 4-day work week (28-hour week) during the other 6 months until the overtime has been utilized. This must be completed no later than April 1st each year. Hours as scheduled by the Manager. Vacations must be scheduled between October and April.
