The Post-Secondary Summer Student (Helper) supports the delivery of culturally safe trauma-informed programming within Ndinawes licensed youth safe spaces serving youth aged 1121. The Helper plays an active role in building meaningful relationships supporting wellness-based activities and contributing to a safe inclusive and engaging environment for all youth participants.

This position is rooted in cultural connection and community care and is guided by the values of the Seven Sacred Teachings.

Specific Accountabilities:

• Build and maintain positive trusting and respectful relationships with youth accessing Ndinawe programs through consistent supportive engagement.
• Support the supervision of youth accessing programming while promoting safety inclusion and respectful behaviour at all times.
• Assist in planning preparing and facilitating recreational cultural and wellness-based activities that reflect youth interests and developmental needs (emotional social cognitive and physical).
• Encourage and support meaningful youth participation in programming and daily activities.
• Serve as a positive consistent and supportive role model for youth.
• Respond to sensitive and confidential situations with professionalism cultural awareness and discretion.
• Assist in setting up organizing and maintaining program spaces ensuring materials and equipment are safe accessible and properly stored.
• Contribute to a welcoming inclusive and culturally safe environment that respects diversity and community strengths.
• Support youth emotional and social development through active listening supportive conversation and skill-building opportunities.
• Assist with documentation program tracking and reporting as required.
• Support the cleanliness safety and upkeep of program spaces and common areas.

Qualifications Required:

• Must be a post-secondary student with an intention to return to studies in Fall 2026.
• Valid Level C CPR/First Aid certification.
• Experience working with urban Indigenous youth (ages 1121) who may be disconnected from family culture and community using a strengths-based and youth-centered approach.
• Experience supporting youth who may have lived or ongoing experiences of trauma including systemic oppression poverty violence grief and loss mental health challenges and substance use in a non-judgmental and supportive manner.
• Ability to plan support and implement engaging youth programming in a safe and inclusive environment.
• Training in conflict resolution de-escalation and risk assessment.
• Strong interpersonal communication and relationship building skills.
• Understanding of the impacts of colonization and ongoing systemic barriers affecting Indigenous youth and families.
• Respect for Indigenous knowledge systems cultural practices ceremonies and healing approaches with the ability to support their inclusion in programming where appropriate.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team in a fast-paced and changing environment.
• Ability to respond calmly and effectively in stressful or crisis situations.
• Strong ability to maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive information with professionalism.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
• Valid Class 5 Drivers Licence.

Ndinawe requires a satisfactory criminal record check (including vulnerable sector search) child abuse registry check and prior contact check prior to the commencement of employment.

Ndinawe will accept existing criminal record checks and child abuse registry checks if dated within 3 months of your start date. Should you be the successful candidate these documents are a condition of employment.
