The Role
The Plumbing Fabrication Manager is responsible for leading the planning coordination and daily operation of the plumbing fabrication shop. The role ensures prefabricated assemblies are produced safely efficiently and to company quality standards while supporting project schedules and field installation requirements. Working closely with VDC Project Management Procurement Warehouse and Field Operations this position drives operational excellence standardization and continuous improvement across the fabrication process.
Keys Tasks
The Plumbing Fabrication Managers responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Fabrication Operations Leadership
- Lead the day-to-day operation of the plumbing fabrication shop ensuring work is completed safely efficiently and in accordance with company standards and project requirements.
- Provide leadership coaching and accountability to the Shop Supervisor / Foreman and fabrication support staff while fostering a culture of teamwork and continuous improvement.
- Plan labour equipment shop capacity and production resources to support project commitments and changing priorities.
- Establish expectations for safety quality productivity housekeeping and operational discipline throughout the shop.
- Support the ongoing development of employees processes and operational consistency.
Production Planning & Scheduling
- Develop maintain and communicate fabrication production schedules based on project priorities labour capacity and field installation dates.
- Coordinate production sequencing and work order priorities to maximize efficiency while supporting field operations.
- Monitor workload constraints material availability and delivery commitments identifying risks before they impact production.
- Adjust priorities in collaboration with project stakeholders as business needs evolve.
- Review production performance against planned targets and implement corrective actions.
VDC & Project Coordination
- Act as the primary liaison between VDC and the fabrication shop.
- Review fabrication packages to ensure drawings work orders and bills of material are complete current and ready for production.
- Coordinate with Project Management Procurement Warehouse and Field Operations to ensure fabrication readiness.
- Provide practical feedback that improves constructability fabrication standards and workflow.
- Promote early collaboration to maximize prefabrication opportunities.
Quality Assurance
- Lead the shop QA/QC process to ensure fabricated assemblies meet company and project standards.
- Monitor deficiencies rework and recurring quality issues while implementing corrective actions.
- Develop standard work quality checklists and repeatable fabrication practices.
- Work with field teams to incorporate installation feedback into future improvements.
Safety & Shop Operations
- Ensure compliance with company safety policies and legislative requirements.
- Promote a clean organized and efficient work environment through strong housekeeping practices.
- Support inspections investigations hazard reporting and corrective actions.
- Ensure tools equipment and work areas remain safe and well maintained.
Continuous Improvement
- Lead initiatives that improve productivity quality workflow and customer service.
- Implement Lean principles standardized work and visual management practices.
- Develop production reporting and performance metrics to support decision-making.
- Encourage innovation and collaboration across departments.
Education
- Red Seal Plumbing Certificate of Qualification; or
- Post-secondary diploma or degree in Construction Management Engineering Technology Operations Management Business or a related discipline combined with relevant fabrication or construction leadership experience.
- Lean Manufacturing Lean Construction Project Management or Continuous Improvement training is considered an asset.
- Valid Class G drivers licence with the ability to travel to project sites as required.
Experience
- Minimum 57 years of progressive experience in construction fabrication manufacturing or operations management.
- Leadership experience in a fabrication or construction environment.
- Experience coordinating with VDC Project Management Procurement Warehouse and Field Operations.
Knowledge and Technical Skills
- Strong understanding of plumbing fabrication construction practices and prefabrication workflows.
- Ability to interpret fabrication drawings specifications bills of material and project documentation.
- Working knowledge of VDC/BIM processes and the integration between design fabrication procurement and field installation.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office fabrication software work order systems and production tracking tools.
- Strong planning analytical and reporting skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
Physical and Environmental Requirements
- Regular work is performed within an active plumbing fabrication shop and office environment with occasional travel to project sites supplier locations or other company facilities as required.
- Frequent walking standing bending reaching and movement throughout the fabrication shop and active construction sites is required.
- Exposure to noise dust moving equipment powered tools and other construction and fabrication-related hazards is expected.
- The ability to occasionally lift carry or move materials and equipment within safe working limits may be required.
- Compliance with all company safety policies and the use of required personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory when working in fabrication or construction environments.
- Occasional work outside of normal business hours may be required to support operational priorities project schedules or business needs.
