About the Role

Reporting to the Aquatic Centre Supervisor and Coordinator the Lifeguard II is responsible for the safeguarding of guests and staff in the aquatic facility by providing exceptional safety supervision preventing incidents and responding to emergencies. Head Guards demonstrate exceptional leadership problem- solving and communication skills; they can delegate tasks and ensure the aquatic centre is a safe and enjoyable atmosphere from open to close.

Working within the Cougars Athletics and Recreation department these are flexible positions whose work schedule is variable and may include an irregular schedule of not less than three (3) hours per shift and up to thirty-five (35) hours per week. These positions will end April 23 2027.

Responsibilities

1. Aquatic Centre Safety and Supervision (45%)

  • Lead the supervision of all aquatic areas through continuous effective scanning and patrolling to prevent incidents and ensure a safe swimming environment.

  • Ensure lifeguard I staff maintain effective coverage and vigilance. Mentor and support team members not meeting expectations in a respectful manner to maintain safety and positive work culture. Refer ongoing issues to the Aquatic Coordinator and Aquatics Supervisor.

  • Prevent incidents: Identify and correct unsafe behaviours before accidents occur. Enforce facility rules consistently and respectfully.

  • Respond rapidly to aquatic emergencies including water rescues and administering first aid or CPR as required.

2. Facility Operations and Maintenance (25%)

  • Oversee and perform daily operational tasks such as water tests head counts mechanical checks safety checks and daily maintenance tasks.

  • Complete opening and closing procedures.

  • Complete head guard update forms communicator logs first aid reports and pool contamination reports as needed.

  • Report facility hazards or deficiencies to supervisory staff.

  • If any of duties are done by a Lifeguard I ensure that they document these tasks accurately and promptly.

  • Safely handle pool chemicals equipment and supplies in accordance with established safetystandards. Mentor and correct Lifeguard I staff on safety standards.

3. Leadership Mentorship and Professional Development (15%)

  • Provide guidance mentorship and feedback to Lifeguard I to promote skill development and professional growth.

  • Conduct semesterly performance evaluations to assess lifeguard competencies as assigned.

  • Lead by example by maintaining high standards of professionalism safety and teamwork.

  • Support in-service training sessions and assist in leading team activities as assigned.

  • Demonstrate teamwork reliability and professionalism by supporting colleagues and promoting a positive workplace culture. Willing and able to share ideas and take constructive criticism.

  • Participate actively in all in-service training.

  • Maintain all required certifications.

  • Model and provide feedback on appropriate conduct on and off deck.

4. Customer Service and Public Relations (10%)

  • Provide exceptional customer service by greeting patrons answering questions and promoting a positive inclusive atmosphere. Handle customer concerns calmly and effectively referring issues to a supervisor when necessary.

  • Educate the public about aquatic safety facility policies and proper use of equipment.

  • Promote recreation programs and water safety awareness.

  • Lead difficult public relations when Lifeguard I need support.

Qualifications

  • Current Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard certificationanda valid Standard First Aid with CPR-C/AED.
  • Availability to work days evenings weekends and holidays.
  • Minimum 18 years of age preferred.
  • Preference given to applicants who hold one or more of the following certifications:Lifesaving Instructor/Examiner/CPR-I National Lifeguard Instructor or who are current students.
  • Preferred: Minimum 1 year of experience as a Lifeguard I at MRU.

Salary: $21.87 - $27.61 per hour
