Description

Through the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS) the Government of Canada has embarked on one of the largest procurement projects since the Second World War. The NSS is a nation-building effort to create a sustainable Canadian shipbuilding industry secure long-term job opportunities and build the next generation of ships for the Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy. Through its NSSrelated work Seaspan Shipyards is owning the redevelopment of our domestic shipbuilding industry on the West Coast and delivering on the promise of ships built in Canada by Canadians.

The Intern Digital Ship will have a hands-on role in shaping next-generation shipbuilding technologies within a forward-thinking Innovation team. Working at Vancouver Shipyards youll support the development of scalable digital twin solutions that integrate real time sensor data 3D models and advanced visualization tools to enhance vessel performance streamline maintenance and maximize this role youll collaborate closely with engineers across R&D new vessel construction and in-service support contributing to the full-stack development lifecycle from designing intuitive web interfaces in React to building backend services APIs and data pipelines. Youll help bring digital ship concepts to life supporting everything from system integration and testing to the delivery of user-focused applications that drive operational efficiency.

What youll do

Depending on the selected candidates qualifications experience and interests tasks may include development integration or testing in the following full-stack technology areas:

  • Frontend Web Development: Develop wireframes app layouts screen designs custom React components backend value retrieval and frontend features for presenting alerts notifications and application data.
  • Backend Development: Develop infrastructure mapping WebSocket frontend integration token management and authentication SQL queries RESTful APIs publish/subscribe protocol integrations frontend utility services and business logic calculations and algorithms.
  • Data Pipeline Development & Integration: Contribute to the design development and maintenance of sustainable data pipelines.

What youll bring

  • Enrollment in a 3rd or 4th year program of Computer Science Computer Engineering or a closely related degree.
  • Proven foundational technical knowledge and hands-on engineering skills through multiple class projects and optional co-op or work-integrated learning experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in frontend development with JavaScript () building component-driven web interface modules.
  • Familiar with the UI/UX principles working with wireframes app layouts image/icon integration and color palettes translating mockups into responsive and interactive web dashboard interfaces.
  • Team-based contributions in designing developing extending and optimizing RESTful microservices and APIs using JavaScript (); experience with Python frameworks such as Flask or Django is considered an asset.
  • Foundational hands-on experience working with relational database systems and database management tools.
  • Participation in Agile/Scrum environments including Git version control sprint planning daily standups code reviews and collaborative development practices.
  • Effective communication interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and analytical abilities that support business-oriented solution development.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and decision-making skills consistent with essential job functions.
  • Natural curiosity and enthusiasm for exploring and developing modern technologies and processes.

We require a full-time commitment Monday-Friday 40 hours per week with an hourly rate of $28.00/hour.

Start Date of Internship: Tuesday September 8th 2026.
End Date of Internship: Friday April 30th 2027 (8-Months).
