Your Role as an Intermediate Mechanical Designer
Reporting to the Manager of Mine Hoist Engineering you will join the specialized Mine Hoist Division of BESTECH operating as Spencer Engineeringa name recognized across North America for excellence in mine hoist engineering.
This is a unique opportunity for an experienced Mechanical Designer looking to apply strong core design skills in a highly specialized engineering discipline. While previous mine hoist experience is not required you will bring a solid mechanical design foundation curiosity and a desire to develop expertise in complex hoisting systems that play a critical role in mining operations.
Working alongside industry-leading Mechanical and Electrical Engineers Designers and Technologists you will contribute to projects involving the design assessment modernization and maintenance of mine hoisting systems. Your work will combine office-based design with hands-on field experience including site visits throughout North America to inspect existing systems collect field data and support commissioning activities.
No two projects are the same. This role offers the opportunity to solve complex engineering challenges work independently while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and build specialized expertise within one of North Americas most respected mine hoist engineering organizations. Once fully trained you can expect to travel to client sites for approximately 25% of your time with the remainder spent designing and collaborating from our Owen Sound Office.
Your Key Accountabilities
Technical and Documentation
Develop and review mechanical drawings scope of work documents and bill of materials.
Perform design and drafting using AutoCAD Inventor and Microstation in accordance with industry standards.
Conduct site visits for data collection verification and documentation.
Complete QAQC reviews and maintain accurate technical records.
Follow industry standards and codes as instructed.
Document work and maintain basic technical records.
Business Development and Client Management
Represent BESTECH professionally with clients contractors and suppliers.
Support client meetings and gather technical requirements for automation solutions.
Assist with technical content for proposals and design packages.
Communicate project updates and contribute to building positive client relationships.
Manage time commitments between projects
Communicate primarily with internal teams with limited external interaction.
Project Coordination and Management
Plan and execute assigned tasks ensuring alignment with scope schedule and budget.
Track time and contribute to documentation such as progress reports and meeting minutes.
Coordinate with internal and external teams for effective project delivery.
Identify issues and recommend solutions to support successful outcomes.
Professional Development
Participate in training and certification programs.
Attend relevant industry workshops and seminars.
Mentor and train junior designers.
Seek feedback and guidance from senior designers and engineers.
Develop expertise in specific technical areas.
Engage in learning opportunities to develop technical and professional skills.
Qualifications
A diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology or a related field is required.
4 to 7 years of relevant experience is required.
Working towards Certified Engineering Technician (CET) Certification is considered a strong asset.
Knowledge of industry codes and regulations is desirable.
Familiarity with drafting and design software tools.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites applications.
Strong analytical skills.
Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
Detail-oriented with a commitment to producing high quality work.
Strong commitment to safety quality and sustainable design practices.
Valid Drivers License.
Valid Passport required with the ability to travel in North America.
Working Conditions
Work is primarily performed in a regular office environment.
Travel to client sites throughout North America is required up to 25% of time to attend meetings and to conduct field visits.
