About Potash and the Jansen Project
The Jansen project in Saskatchewan Canada is set to become one of the largest potash mines in the world and islocatedapproximately140 kilometerseast of Saskatoon. As the largest investment in Saskatchewans history Jansen is expected to generate approximately 5500 workforce opportunities during construction and 900 long-term roles.
Once fully ramped up Jansen is expected to havean initialproduction capacity of approximately 8.5 milliontonnesper annum (Mtpa) with the potential to produce 16 to 17 Mtpa in future stages. To find out more about Potash and the Jansen projectclick here.

About the Role
BHP is seeking an experienced and strategic technical leader to join the Jansen Stage 2 (JS2) Project as Head of Technical. Reporting to the JS2 Project Director this role will provide leadership across Engineering Operational Technology (OT) and Technology functions to ensure engineering design and execution support the safe efficient and successful delivery of one of the worlds most significant potash developments.
The Head of Technical is responsible for driving technical excellence across the project by integrating plans and activities across functional boundaries providing engineering governance and assurance and overseeing both EPCM service provider performance and BHP self-performed technical scopes. The role plays a critical part in ensuring engineering solutions enable safe construction successful commissioning and operational readiness while maximizing value and managing risk.
Key Accountabilities
- Lead the Engineering Operational Technology and Technology functions across the Jansen Stage 2 Project.
- Establish and govern engineering best practices standards processes tools and quality frameworks to support successful project delivery.
- Provide technical assurance oversight compliance and governance of EPCM service provider activities and technical delivery outcomes.
- Drive technical quality management strategies and ensure engineering deliverables meet project and operational requirements.
- Identify technical capability requirements address expertise gaps and develop workforce strategies to ensure project success.
- Apply systems thinking to optimize value eliminate duplication and support effective decision-making across the project portfolio.
- Partner with internal and external stakeholders including engineering service providers to align priorities and deliver project objectives.
- Lead risk-informed decision-making and strengthen a risk-aware culture across the project.
- Support project execution through the entire lifecycle including engineering construction commissioning and handover to operations.
About You
- A degree in Engineering and significant experience leading the technical delivery of large mining capital projects.
- Post-graduate qualifications such as an MBA are advantageous
- Extensive engineering and design management experience across the full project lifecycle from studies and design through construction commissioning and operational readiness.
- Strong experience working with EPCM organizations including technical governance engineering assurance and contractor performance management.
- A strong understanding of project engineering technical quality management risk management and project execution methodologies.
- Proven capability in strategic planning resource prioritization continuous improvement and value optimization.
- Outstanding communication relationship-building and stakeholder engagement skills.
- The ability to navigate complexity solve technical challenges and make sound commercial and operational decisions
- Operational Technology and digital technology integration within mining projects.
- Preferred experience in Potash underground mining or major resource project experience.
- Able to travel between Saskatoon and Calgary.
