PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
As a General Claims Representative you will be responsible for investigating evaluating and resolving a variety of railroad-related claims including third-party property damage and injury claims. You will work closely with claimants internal stakeholders legal counsel and external partners to gather information assess liability and ensure claims are handled professionally efficiently and in compliance with company policies and applicable regulations.
This position can be based in Calgary AB or the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) ON with offices in Hamilton
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Manage a caseload of railroad-related claims from initial notification through resolution
- Investigate and evaluate property damage liability and third-party damage claims
- Collect review and analyze information related to incidents including reports witness statements photographs repair estimates invoices and other supporting documentation
- Communicate directly with claimants to gather facts answer questions and provide updates throughout the claims process
- Conduct thorough investigations to determine the circumstances of an incident and identify responsible parties
- Assess liability and determine fault based on facts evidence applicable regulations and company policies
- Identify information gaps and proactively seek additional details to support claim decisions
- Maintain complete accurate and organized claim files and documentation
- Prepare claim summaries reports correspondence and recommendations
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders across Operations Risk Management Finance and Legal
- Work closely with both inside and outside legal counsel on complex claims and litigation matters
- Evaluate damages and support settlement negotiations and claim resolutions
- Ensure all claims are handled in compliance with applicable legislation regulations and company procedures
- Utilize claims management systems and the Microsoft Office Suite to track document and manage claim activities
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Post-secondary education in Business Insurance Risk Management Law or a related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Minimum of 2 years of experience handling claims investigations insurance matters legal support work or a related field
- Experience managing claim files and maintaining detailed documentation
- Knowledge of claims investigation and liability assessment principles
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders
- Strong organizational and file management skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word Excel Outlook and PowerPoint)
- Strong analytical problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment

Management Conductor Program
Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
