The Retail & Gallery Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Prospect Art Collective store. Reporting to the Program Manager for Prospects Retail Mental Health program you will have a solid grasp of the programs mission in assisting job seekers gain meaningful retail work experience while maintaining the storefront and supervising the permanent retail staff.

What will you do

  • Act as a store key holder ensuring the store is opened closed and secured in accordance with organizational procedures.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the retail store including customer service staffing coverage sales activities merchandising inventory and point-of-sale processes.
  • Supervise a team of 2-4 part-time Retail Store Associates including scheduling day-to-day direction performance support training and coordination of HR-related processes in collaboration with the Program Manager and Human Resources.
  • Coordinate and supervise Retail Mental Health program clients who are ready to progress into customer-facing work experience within the retail store.
  • Provide hands-on coaching guidance and support to clients as they build practical retail customer service workplace readiness and employability skills.
  • Learn and maintain a working understanding of the Retail Mental Health program model including program flow client transitions between phases and the role of retail work experience in supporting client progress.
  • Provide site leadership and operational support when the Program Manager is absent including responding to day-to-day issues and escalating concerns as appropriate.
  • Coordinate with external arts organizations artists and community partners to support in-store pop-up galleries artist-in-residence opportunities and related retail/gallery initiatives.
  • Coordinate and oversee gallery technician activities within the store to support exhibition setup display maintenance and takedown.
  • Assist the Program Manager with the management tracking and documentation of artist contracts and related administrative requirements.
  • Maintain effective inventory management practices including receiving tracking organizing replenishing and monitoring retail and gallery merchandise.
  • Operate and oversee point-of-sale systems including sales transactions cash handling reconciliation and related reporting processes.
  • Support visual merchandising and store presentation to create an accessible welcoming and engaging customer experience.
  • Assist with marketing and promotional activities for the store gallery exhibitions events and community partnerships.
  • Support in-store gallery work including ArtRecruits client exhibitions and other fee-for-service or ad hoc gallery exhibitions.

What it Takes to Do This Job (Knowledge Skills and Abilities Required)

  • Minimum 5-7 years of retail store management experience.
  • High School Diploma as a minimum 2-4 year post secondary education is an asset.
  • Possession of a valid Alberta drivers licence and access to a reliable vehicle for travel.
  • Knowledge of the arts community in Edmonton is considered a strong asset.
  • Strong communication skills with a welcoming empathetic leadership style.
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to create a welcoming respectful and positive experience for customers clients artists and community partners.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills including the ability to guide coach and support staff and clients in a busy retail and gallery environment.
  • Knowledge of Prospects programs and services as a previous client or community partner would be a strong asset.
  • Working knowledge or willingness to learn how to use printing tools including Cricut T-shirt press and scanners.
  • Demonstrated experience using point-of-sale systems basic computer applications and retail tools with the ability to support others in their use.
  • Experience working with vulnerable and/or disabled individuals either personally professionally or through post-secondary education.

Further Notes

  • Full-time 8-month Contract with possibility of extension.
  • Hours of work are Tuesday Saturday 10AM-6PM.
  • A reliable vehicle and valid Alberta minimum Class 5 drivers license are required.
  • Travel within and around Edmonton is required for this position.
  • Ability to stand for 6-8 hours.
  • Ability to lift and carry large objects from 5-25kg.
  • Ability to use and train others on the stores printing tools.
