Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (35 hours per week)

Reporting to the Food Services Supervisor the Food Service Helper as part of a team provides support to the operation of the kitchen and food/beverage counter at The Mustard Seed byassistingwith sorting and organizing food donations foodpreparationand cleaning activities. Maintaining Occupational Health & Safety Standards is also a key part of this role.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Sort and organize of food donations
  • Assistwith packaging assorted pastries baked items and other food asrequired
  • Assistwith serving guests snacks beverages coffee and warming sandwiches
  • Perform food preparation: peeling potatoes carrots and chopping vegetables
  • Assistwith bagging items for various programs such as School Lunch Program Food Depot Mens Kitchen and other food programming.
  • Ensure pantry coolers freezers and fridges are kept clean and organized
  • Wash and store dishes
  • Clean and keep kitchen organized
  • Work alongside andassistwith volunteers asrequired
  • Maintain Occupational Health & Safety Standards
  • Participate in all required training

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Experience working in a kitchen environment is considered an asset
  • Food safety certification is considered a strong asset
  • Customer service experience
  • Must be able to handle a knife and have basic kitchen skills (operating oven dishwasher other appliances)
  • Good organizational skills
  • Good problem-solving and quick decision-making skills; ability to think on-your-feet
  • Ability to recognize andmaintainappropriate boundarieswith co-workersvolunteersand guests
  • High levelof confidentiality especiallypertaining toguests information
  • Willingness toparticipatein any essential training required by The Mustard Seed
  • Desire to serve in a Christian ministry

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Hands-on fast-paced active positionrequiring moderate to significant physical effort:lifting upto 25lbs standing for duration of shift bending pushing or pulling carts
  • Position requires moderate to significant mental effort
  • Position involves working closely with volunteers and staff
  • Ability to work in hot and cold temperatures/work environmentrequired
  • Employees are to be aware that many of our clients may experience difficulties or impairment at times which could result in them uttering threats discriminatory statements and other insults at your person. This may be in a raised voice or in seeing unpredictable behaviour up to and including the possibility of them becoming aggressive
    • Training on how to respond is provided but this is to be considered typical working conditions. Many of our clients are unaware of the impact of these comments

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR CANADA SUMMER JOBS

  • Please do not apply if all these conditions are not met
  • Be between 15 to 30 years of age
  • Be a Canadian citizen permanent resident or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canadain accordance withrelevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
  • Not a member of the immediate family of the employer or an officer/director of the employer
  • International students are not eligible participants
