This is an incredibly exciting time to join our Engineering Safety Division (ESD) Bus Fleet team. We are receiving the next generation of highway coaches with the latest emissions-compliant technology and are advancing the procurement of a new double-decker fleet. We are seeking an Engineering Specialist Diesel Powertrain to provide technical leadership on the reliability performance and continuous improvement of our diesel bus fleet. Working closely with Bus Fleet Maintenance Operations Reliability Engineering and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) this role will investigate complex vehicle issues develop practical engineering solutions and support the long-term performance of the fleet.
As part of a multidisciplinary engineering team this position also offers the opportunity to collaborate across the organization in support of diesel-powered rail locomotive systems providing technical expertise on complex engine and powertrain issues
The successful candidate will be the technical subject matter expert for diesel powertrain systems and related vehicle components. They will investigate recurring fleet issues identify root causes collaborate with OEMs to develop permanent corrective actions and support the introduction of new vehicle technologies. This role combines hands-on technical problem solving with engineering analysis to improve fleet reliability safety and maintainability.
The ideal candidate combines extensive hands-on heavy vehicle experience with strong technical problem-solving skills. You have experience in transit bus highway coach heavy truck commercial fleet or diesel rail environments and are comfortable investigating complex vehicle issues working alongside maintenance teams and partnering with OEM engineering groups to develop sustainable long-term technical solutions.
Lead technical investigations into complex diesel powertrain emissions aftertreatment cooling driveline and related vehicle system failures.
Work directly with OEM engineering teams to develop validate and implement corrective actions for recurring fleet issues.
Perform root cause failure analysis using field observations maintenance history diagnostic data and engineering principles.
Evaluate proposed design changes and replacement components to improve reliability maintainability and lifecycle performance.
Make recommendations for the installation and long-term viability of field-tested replacement components or sub-systems
Investigates age maintenance and design-related performance trends
Provide technical guidance to maintenance staff during troubleshooting of complex vehicle issues.
Review requests and operational feedback from Bus Fleet Maintenance and Operations to assess the feasibility and technical impacts of modifications to existing and new fleet equipment.
Monitors quality control processes and procedures undertaken
University degree in Engineering Engineering Technology or a related technical discipline or an equivalent combination of education and extensive heavy vehicle industry experience.
Extensive experience diagnosing maintaining or supporting heavy-duty diesel vehicles such as transit buses highway coaches heavy trucks or commercial fleet equipment.
Experience working with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to resolve technical issues develop product improvements or implement engineering changes would be considered a strong asset.
Strong working knowledge of heavy-duty diesel engines emissions aftertreatment systems cooling systems fuel systems powertrain components and vehicle diagnostics.
Strong understanding of heavy vehicle mechanical and electrical systems diagnostic tools electronic service information and testing equipment.
Knowledge of continuous improvement processes like Lean or Six Sigma would be considered an asset.
Working knowledge of rules and regulations established by Transport Canada (TC) Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) and the American Public Transit Association (APTA) would be considered an asset.
Registration or eligible to be registered as a . is considered an asset.
Registration or eligible to be a licensed 310T technician considered an asset.
Experience supporting heavy-duty diesel powertrain systems in transit bus highway coach commercial fleet heavy truck or rail locomotive applications is considered an asset. Familiarity with Cummins (L9 X12 QSK19 QSK60) EMD 710 or equivalent heavy-duty diesel engine platforms is preferred
