JOB SUMMARY

The Energy Engineer Lighting Systems & Renewable Technologies is the technical authority for the development engineering and technical assurance of lighting lighting controls solar PV and related electrical efficiency measures delivered through Ontario utility and IESO-administered energy efficiency programs including Save on Energy custom and prescriptive pathways and Blackstone performance contracting models.

This role leads lighting and electrical audits develops Investment Grade Feasibility Studies (IGFS) and ensures measures are defined in accordance with IESO program rules baseline and eligibility requirements codes and standards and measurement and verification (M&V) protocols. The Engineer provides technical oversight through design development and implementation review to ensure installed systems align with the approved design intent savings assumptions and utility incentive documentation.

Note: This role is focused on engineering accountability and design intent assurance.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Lighting Audits Baseline Definition & Compliance Assessment

  • Lead on-site and desktop audits of existing lighting systems lighting controls and applicable renewable technologies including fixture inventories operating schedules space use classification and baseline condition assessments.
  • Provide compliance assessment of current lighting levels to applicable codes and standards (IES CSA OBC)

Measure Development & IESO Program Alignment

  • Develop complete utility-ready measure scopes suitable for Save on Energy prescriptive and custom applications and ESCO delivery including:
    • Design intent and basis of design
    • Equipment schedules and technical specifications
    • Control narratives and sequences of operation
    • Commissioning and acceptance criteria
  • Screen and structure measures to meet IESO eligibility rules applicable codes and standards baseline definitions interactive effects treatment and persistence requirements.

Equipment Specification & Technology Selection

  • Specify and select lighting lighting controls and renewable equipment based on:
    • Performance and reliability
    • Applicable codes and standards compliance
    • Maintainability and lifecycle cost
    • Utility program eligibility (e.g. qualified products control requirements)
  • Coordinate with manufacturers controls vendors and specialist consultants to validate technical approach and savings assumptions.

Savings Analysis Costing & Incentives

  • Develop detailed energy demand and operating hour savings calculations consistent with Ontario utility and IESO program methodologies.
  • Prepare detailed cost estimates and pricing inputs for equipment installation commissioning and M&V using internal tools and validated vendor or subcontractor pricing.
  • Where current lighting levels are non-compliant ensure measure financial analysis addresses necessary upgrades.
  • Monitor Ontario utility and IESO incentive programs maintaining current knowledge of:
    • Program rules and changes
    • Application pathways (prescriptive vs. custom)
    • Documentation and inspection requirements
    • Submission timelines and review processes

Incentive & M&V Documentation

  • Prepare and support submission of utility-ready incentive documentation including:
    • Baseline and postretrofit lighting inventories
    • Lighting level measurements and applicable codes and standards compliance confirmation
    • Equipment cut sheets and control descriptions
    • Savings calculations and technical narratives
  • Define appropriate M&V approaches aligned with IESO and ESCO requirements including:
    • Baseline documentation standards
    • Stipulated vs. measured parameters
    • Commissioning verification
    • Postinstallation validation

Design Intent Assurance (IGFS Implementation)

  • Ensure measures developed in the IGFS are engineered and implemented in accordance with the approved scope and design intent by:
    • Reviewing submittals shop drawings and asbuilt documentation
    • Reviewing lighting layouts control zoning and programmed sequences
    • Reviewing commissioning results and functional performance testing
  • Identify document and assess deviations from design intent and evaluate impacts to savings incentives maintenance and performance guarantees where applicable.

Reporting & Technical Communication

  • Prepare high-quality technical reports engineering narratives and presentations for internal approval client decision-making and utility review.
  • Clearly document assumptions exclusions risks and compliance considerations associated with utility programs and M&V.

Additional Duties

  • Support interdepartmental and intercompany initiatives related to energy efficiency electrification decarbonization and renewable energy solutions in Ontario.
  • Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of internal engineering standards calculation tools templates and best practices related to lighting controls incentives and M&V.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Electrical or Energy Engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of five (5) years of relevant energy engineering experience.
  • . designation in the Province of Ontario is required (or the ability to acquire . designation).
  • CEM CMVP or equivalent.

ESSENTIAL COMPETENCIES:

Knowledge: Highefficiency lighting systems and controls applicable codes and standards (CSA lighting standards Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) OBC) electrical systems solar PV fundamentals Ontario utility and IESO energy efficiency programs ESCO performance contracting and M&V practices.

Skills: Lighting audits and illuminance measurement baseline definition equipment specification savings calculations utility incentive documentation M&V planning technical reporting and design intent verification.

Attributes: Positive attitude initiative strong work ethic technical leadership accountability flexibility and ability to work collaboratively. Moderate travel required (based on the needs of the role) with a valid drivers license. Minimum requirement of 3 days a week in a Blackstone office depending on travel requirements.
