Mount Saint Vincent Universitys Child Study Centre is entering an exciting new chapter as we prepare to open the expanded and new child care facility in early Spring 2027.

Founded in 1976 the Child Study Centre is a licensed not-for-profit early learning and child care centre committed to providing high-quality inclusive accessible and culturally responsive programming for young children. We create environments where children and educators are inspired to explore create and grow while honouring diverse identities experiences and ways of knowing.

As a university-based child care centre we work closely with the MSVU community and the Child and Youth Study program. Our educators have unique opportunities to mentor students engage with research contribute to innovative practice and help shape the future of early childhood education and care in Nova Scotia.

About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Director Child Study Centre the Early Childhood Educator contributes to a safe inclusive and responsive environment where children are recognized as capable curious and active participants in their learning and experiences. The Early Childhood Educator works collaboratively with children families and colleagues to observe document and develop responsive curriculum that emerges from childrens interests ideas relationships and experiences. The role includes supporting childrens well-being belonging and participation; creating thoughtful indoor and outdoor environments; and engaging in reflective pedagogical practice and collaborative inquiry.

  • Co-create implement and reflect on responsive curriculum and learning experiences.
  • Create safe inclusive and engaging indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Observe and document childrens interests ideas experiences and participation.
  • Build respectful reciprocal relationships with children families and colleagues.
  • Mentor and support practicum students and volunteers.
  • Engage in ongoing professional learning reflective practice and quality improvement initiatives.
What youll need
Qualifications

The ideal candidate will bring a minimum of 3 years of experience working with children in an ECE classroom and an ECE Level 2 or higher. The candidate will need to be familiar with the Nova Scotia Early Learning Curriculum Framework and have experience working with children using an emergent curriculum approach. They will be familiar with observing children and recording these observations to create relevant curriculum experiences in the classroom. The candidate will have excellent written and verbal communication skills and should be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.

The candidate will demonstrate a genuine appreciation for children and their abilities. The candidate must be able to work as part of a team of educators and work cooperatively with families. Willingness to continue with professional development and education is a must. First Aid and CPR certification is required.

Experience with pedagogical documentation would be an asset. Specific work experience with children below three years of age is an asset.

The successful candidate will be required to undergo a Child Abuse Registry check Vulnerable Sector check and Criminal Records check.
