POSITION OVERVIEW

The Community Sector Support (CSS) Specialist role will connect community organizations including charities non-profits and social enterprises with services and capacity-building supports. The primary focus will be implementation of a Fractional Professional Services pilot program.

The goal of the pilot program is to support small and emerging non-profit organizations in the Bow Valley by linking them to fractional professional services particularly in areas such as finance compliance and governance. The pilot will prioritize serving organizations in the founding and building stages of development with a focus on those facing urgent operational challenges and showing readiness to bringing this program to life the CSS Specialist will serve as a trusted guide and referral agent helping organizations identify their priorities navigate available supports and access services.

The CSS Specialist will also act as a general resource for organizations across different stages of development to help in navigating and accessing supports and services to address a wide range of needs e.g. from strategic planning to communications and fundraising.

This position requires a blend of relational skill sector knowledge organizational competence and practical judgment.

The CSS Specialist will report to the Executive Director.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILTIES

Program Intake Assessment and Navigation

  • Receive and respond to inquiries from organizations seeking administrative capacity-building or organizational support guidance or navigation within the social sector.

  • Conduct intake conversations to understand organizational context history current challenges and goals; Identify priority areas and assess eligibility for available supports and subsidies

  • Make referrals to professional service providers participating in the pilot program

  • Where possible provide additional resources guidance direction and recommendations based on each organizations prioritized needs.

  • Where possible support organizations in building institutional knowledge documenting systems and creating continuity through staff transitions.

Service Provider Network Development

  • Establish and develop a network of professional service providers particularly those with expertise in Finance and Accounting Governance and Compliance to be engaged in delivering fractional support to eligible organizations.

  • Establish terms of engagement for service providers including compensation models.

  • Seek opportunities to create value for participating professionals through sharing knowledge and tools and by supporting development of common practices and standards.

General Program Administration

  • Manage a budget for professional services subsidies

  • Monitor progress of supported organizations

  • Collect and manage data to support program reporting contact management and impact measurement; leverage BCFs database tools

Sector Capacity-Building

  • Contribute to the development of a Bow Valley-focused resource library including templates policy frameworks and curated training resources.

  • Liaise with local and regional sector supporters and initiatives including Bow Valley Non-Profit Forum and Leadership Table Pauw Foundation FCSS at Town of Banff and Canmore and Calgary Foundation

  • Identify cohort or group training opportunities and make recommendations to relevant partners.

General

  • As part of the BCF core team support for day-to-day operations of the foundation and maintain a welcoming and supportive presence in community.

  • Other ad hoc tasks and projects as mutually agreed to from time to time

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

Required

  • Experience working in or with the non-profit sector including direct understanding of organizational operations and governance.

  • Strong relational skills with the ability to build trust with a wide range of organizational leaders including those in crisis or survival mode.

  • Ability to assess organizational needs quickly and identify practical prioritized actions.

  • Strong organizational skills and comfort managing multiple relationships and concurrent files.

  • Familiarity with non-profit compliance governance financial operations and/or fundraising.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Advanced MS Office 365 skills and comfort working in a database-driven workspace

Preferred

  • Direct experience in a non-profit leadership management or advisory role.

  • Knowledge of the Bow Valley non-profit landscape and community.

  • Experience with fractional service delivery program coordination or capacity-building initiatives.

  • Direct experience in one or more priority areas of professional service e.g. Finance Accounting

  • Familiarity with grant administration policy writing or strategic planning facilitation.

  • Proficiency with basic project management and documentation tools.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

This one-year term 20 hour per week position is based in the Bow Valley region with some remote work possible. General office hours to be scheduled on weekdays with flexibility to fit a fractional or portfolio work model. Some evenings/weekends will be required to attend community and sector meetings. Ideal start-date is early August 2026. Compensation range: $40000 $45000 annually plus benefits. The contract offers room to grow with the possibility of extension and increased scope.
