Job Summary
About the Role
Working within the Cougars Athletics and Recreation department these are flexible positions whose work schedule is variable and may include an irregular schedule of not less than three (3) hours per shift and up to thirty-five (35) hours per week. These positions will end March 31 2027.
The Broadcast Play-by-Play Commentators are the lead voice of MRU Cougars games on Canada West TV. This role involves delivering live real-time narration of the games including calling the action providing team context highlighting key performances and engaging viewers throughout the game. The Play-by-Play commentator works alongside a colour commentator at the direction of a Broadcast Supervisor to provide a professional and entertaining broadcast experience.
This position requires strong communication skills a confident and engaging voice and a solid understanding of basketball hockey soccer or volleyball rules strategy and terminology. Preparation is key commentators are expected to research player stats team histories and storylines ahead of each match. Ideal for students interested in sports media journalism or broadcasting this role offers hands-on experience in live sports commentary and production.
Responsibilities
- Set-up test and use various webcast technologies/software; troubleshoot as required.
- Sound-test and tune audio/video settings on game day.
- Be the voice and energy of Cougars games.
- Memorize home team rosters (names numbers and faces).
- Learn visiting team rosters (names numbers)
- Follow daily run of show and script frameworks; meet sponsorship requirements as dictated by MRU and Canada West.
- Help create storylines for each game and know opposing team players and stats
- Create an approachable and friendly demeanor as you facilitate interviews
- Work with the Broadcast Supervisor to create content for Canada West Broadcast
Qualifications
- 6 - 12months of related experience
- Passion for sports
- A strong knowledge of basketball hockey soccer or volleyball
- Interest in professional development and sporting event experiences
- Ability to work all shifts between Thursday - Sunday afternoons and evenings.
- Outgoing and personable individual with a clear energetic and dynamic voice.
- Highly motivated individual who can work well independently under pressure.
- Commitment to time management and punctuality.
- Strong focus and attention to detail.
- Ability to lift items of up to 50lbs on an occasional basis.
Salary: $21.87 - $27.61 per hour
