Job Summary
About the Role
Working within the Cougars Athletics and Recreation department these are flexible positions whose work schedule is variable and may include an irregular schedule of not less than three (3) hours per shift and up to thirty-five (35) hours per week. These positions will end March 31 2027.
The Camera Operator is responsible for operating broadcast cameras during MRU Cougars hockey basketball soccer or volleyball games delivering high-quality footage for Canada West TV streams. Working under the direction of the Broadcast Producer the Camera Operator captures live action that aligns with broadcast standards including tight tracking of gameplay smooth transitions and dynamic framing of key moments like attacks blocks three-pointers fouls and celebrations.
This role requires focus timing and a feel for the pace of the game. Operators must be able to adapt quickly to the flow of play maintain steady shots and follow fast-moving athletes with precision. Experience with camera equipment is an asset but on-the-job training is provided. The Camera Operator is vital to the viewer experience and is a great opportunity for students interested in media film or live sports production.
Responsibilities
Pre-Game
- Setting up and testing camera equipment prior to game time
- Following instructions from broadcast producer regarding changes to broadcast schedule
In-Game
- Operating cameras during games
- Taking direction from broadcast producer
- Troubleshooting any problems that may arise during broadcasts
Post-Game
- Equipment take down and clean up
- Completing inventory checklist with broadcast producer to ensure all equipment is returned
Qualifications
- MRU students enrolled in the broadcasting or journalism program are preferred
- 12-18 months of related experience
- Experience in live broadcast production would be an asset
- Excellent time management skills
- Ability to plan prioritize and meet tight deadlines
- Must be able to work independently and with a team with minimal supervision
- Must be available to work evenings and weekends
Salary: $15.45 - $19.44 per hour
