Role Overview
Canada Life is seeking an experienced API Architect to define and drive API strategy design scalable integration solutions and establish best practices for API development across the enterprise. This role provides technical leadership to ensure secure reusable and high-performing API ecosystems.
Key Responsibilities
Define API architecture standards design patterns and best practices
Design scalable secure and reusable APIs and integration frameworks
Lead the adoption of microservices and API-led connectivity strategies
Guide development teams on API design governance and implementation
Establish API lifecycle management versioning and documentation standards
Ensure API security (OAuth2 JWT encryption threat protection)
Evaluate and implement API management platforms (e.g. Azure API Management)
Collaborate with enterprise architects DevOps and product teams
Review and approve solution designs to align with enterprise architecture
Drive performance optimization monitoring and reliability improvements
Required Qualifications
7 years of experience in API design integration or backend architecture
Strong expertise in API architecture RESTful services and microservices
Proficiency in or ecosystems
Experience with cloud platforms (Azure preferred)
Deep understanding of API security standards (OAuth2 OpenID Connect JWT)
Experience with API gateways and management platforms
Strong knowledge of CI/CD DevOps and containerization (Docker/Kubernetes)
Excellent stakeholder communication and technical leadership skills
Nice-to-Have
Experience in financial services or insurance domain
Exposure to event-driven architecture (Kafka messaging systems)
Knowledge of TOGAF or other enterprise architecture frameworks
Work Arrangement
Hybrid model with a minimum of 3 days per week in the office. Leadership role in a collaborative cross-functional environment.
