Position Summary

Bow Valley College is seeking a dynamic and relationship-focused Accessibility Advisor. Reporting to the Manager Accessibility and Conduct the Accessibility Advisor plays a key role in supporting student success by providing case management assessment accommodation planning and direct support for students with disabilities. This position helps ensure the College meets its legal obligations under provincial and federal legislation including the Alberta Human Rights Act while fostering an inclusive and accessible learning environment.


You will work directly with students faculty and staff to assess accommodation needs develop individualized plans promote Universal Design for Learning (UDL) strategies and support equitable access to education. The role also includes maintaining accessibility records and reporting contributing to disability awareness initiatives and collaborating on grant-funded projects that advance equity diversity and inclusion for students with disabilities.


What Youll Be Doing:

Case Management and Student Support: Provide individualized support to prospective and current students by assessing eligibility for accommodations and determining appropriate support based on documented disabilities and functional limitations. You will review medical psychological and neuropsychological documentation consult with external professionals when needed and develop customized accommodation plans and UDL strategies that support academic success.


In this role you will also orient students to available services and assistive technologies coordinate referrals for additional assessments or supports document accommodation decisions and support students in accessing disability-related funding and grants. Collaboration with faculty and instructional staff is an important part of the position particularly when resolving accommodation-related concerns and supporting accessible Work Integrated Learning experiences.


Collaborate on Universal Design for Learning and Accessibility Initiatives: Work closely with faculty and staff to identify opportunities to embed Universal Design for Learning principles into courses and learning environments. This includes reviewing course syllabi and assessment tools recommending inclusive teaching and assessment practices and supporting the use of multiple means of representation engagement action and expression.


You will also educate students on how to use UDL strategies effectively and help build broader campus awareness of accessibility accommodations and inclusive learning practices. A key part of the role is promoting understanding and implementation of the Colleges Student Accommodation Policy and UDL principles across the institution.


Maintain Accessibility Records and Reporting: Maintain accurate case notes accommodation records and statistical data in compliance with college policies and POPA requirements. You will enter and update information in the Student Information System track services provided and prepare reports required by the College and the Government of Alberta.


The role also involves analyzing service data to identify trends opportunities for improvement and potential enhancements to accessibility support and service delivery.


Support Grant Development and Community Engagement: Contribute to student-focused equity diversity inclusion and disability awareness initiatives by researching and supporting grant opportunities in collaboration with Fund Development and Applied Research. You may assist with preparing proposals budgets presentations and supporting documentation for funding applications.


In addition you will participate in professional development provide presentations and resources to students and departments represent the College in accessibility-related committees or conferences and support the broader Student Services team during peak periods or staff absences.

Your understanding of accommodation processes Universal Design for Learning and disability-related funding enables you to provide practical student-centered support while balancing legal academic and institutional requirements.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree from a relevant program (e.g. Psychology Social Work Education and Disability Studies).
  • Minimum 3-5 years of directly related work experience ideally within the post-secondary support for students with disabilities field.
  • Excellent knowledge of medical psychological and neuropsychological documentation of disability and or health conditions and possesses the ability to determine how functional limitations of disabilities and medical conditions impact students and learning in a post-secondary environment.
  • Ability to understand and utilize psychoeducational assessment information for the purpose of developing academic accommodation plans.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Student Information Systems time-management skills and ability to navigate high volumes of student requests during peak periods.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Occasional evening work will be required.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent understanding of human rights legislation as it applies to students with disabilities in a post-secondary setting.
  • Knowledge of legal issues related to the Duty to Accommodate Persons with Disabilities in post-secondary settings.
  • Thorough knowledge of available and emerging academic accommodations and barriers to learning for students with disabilities.
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills
