• Salary relative to experience and ranges from $112375 to $124158 super

The Conservation and Restoration Science Branch of the Science and Insights Division is seeking an experienced Scientist Spatial to deliver spatial analysis mapping and environmental data solutions that support biodiversity science and conservation outcomes across NSW.

As a Scientist Spatial youll use mapping spatial analysis and environmental data to support biodiversity conservation and restoration programs across NSW. Working with scientists and project teams youll develop spatial products manage complex datasets and provide insights that inform environmental decision-making. Your work will contribute to the delivery of evidence-based science that helps protect and restore the states natural environment and biodiversity.

About You

You have working experience analysing biodiversity or environmental spatial data and are confident using geographical information systems (GIS) and related spatial tools and ideally coding with R Python or similar platforms. You enjoy turning complex datasets into meaningful insights and delivering accurate high-quality outputs. Additionally you will have demonstrated attention to standard procedures quality control workflow optimisation and process-first collaborative management of spatial datasets of varied providence and formats

You work well with technical and science experts communicate technical information clearly and can manage competing priorities across multiple projects. Curious and solutions-focused youre motivated by applying spatial science to real-world environmental challenges and achieving practical conservation outcomes.

Key knowledge and experience

• Demonstrated expertise in computer-based mapping and analysis of biodiversity and environmental spatial data.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in GIS software programs (R Python ArcGIS and/or open-source platforms) and management of large spatial datasets.

Essential requirements

• Relevant science degree
• A current Class C driver licence and a willingness and ability to travel for work.

About the Team Science & Insights

Working at the intersection of science policy and delivery Science & Insights collaborates across government academia industry and communities to identify priority issues and deliver practical high-impact solutions.

The division brings together six specialist branches spanning conservation and restoration climate and atmospheric science environmental protection remote sensing and landscape science science impact and assessment and water wetlands and coastal science.

Together these teams provide the evidence expertise and insights needed to understand NSWs environment manage risks and drive sustainable outcomes.

The divisions work is focused on building a strong evidence base advancing innovation in how data is gathered and used and translating complex scientific information into clear actionable insights and advice. Through scientific rigour partnerships and knowledge sharing Science & Insights plays a critical role in protecting restoring and strengthening the resilience of NSWs environment for future generations.

DCCEEW also ensures sustainable management of water resources across the state to support the environment communities and industry.
