Position Overview
This advertisement is for either a Senior Solicitor and Practice Lead Police Accountability or Solicitor Police Accountability.
Redfern Legal Centres Police Accountabilitypractice is a high impact strategic practice that creates positive change for people and the practice provides advice on police complaints and responds to systemic issues that arise from our casework through test casesadvocacyand law reform.
TheSolicitorprovidesadvice and representationon police powers police complaints civil tort claims against police and challenging undertakesadvice and legalassistancework in theGeneralist practice in areasincluding discriminationvictimscompensation AVOs Stolen Generations Reparations National Redress Scheme guardianshipandgovernment to ourcommunity legal education program and law reform activities and may supervise andassistthe UNSW Police Powers role involves working with local and statewide organisations toidentifysystemic issues and develop policy lawreformand advocacy strategies to address these issues.
TheSenior SolicitorPractice Lead Police Accountability and Generalist Practicemanagesthepolicing and generalistpractices including supervision ofjuniorsolicitors and providesadvice caseworkeducationand law reform activities inpolicingtolocal residentsand people experiencing disadvantage across role liaises with UNSWandassistswith the UNSW police powers role involves significant stakeholder relationships and driving innovative advocacy and policy strategies and litigation to achieve change.
Position Responsibilities
- Conductreviewand supervise advice and casework in policing and generalist law including the preparation of complaints and appearances in minor criminal matters.
- Supervise solicitor volunteers who provide advice to clients including liaising with pro bono firms providinginductionand training and signing off on legaladvices.
- Prepare publications such as fact sheets and website material toassistclients to understand their rights.
- Conduct training onpolice powersfor community workers supportworkersand client/target group(s).
- Identifyand drive systemicpolicy andlawreformworkto achieve changein relation to police accountability.
- Develop and undertake test cases inrelation to police accountability.
- Contribute to Redfern Legal Centre through attendance at staff meetings contribution to board and funding reportsassistancewith intake including intake supervision shifts and contribution to the effective implementation of our Reconciliation Action Plan.
- In addition forthe Senior solicitor:Supervisesolicitors conducting advice and casework community legal education and policy and advocacy work in the policing and generalist practices.
Knowledgeskillsand experience
Essential: Solicitor
- Qualified to practice as a solicitor in NSWandholds or is eligible to hold a currentpractisingcertificateand at least2 yearsrelevantpost qualification experience.
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice.
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative accept responsibility and work with limited supervision providing advice and conducting casework on a range of civiland criminallegal issues.
- Demonstrated ability to work with people experiencingdisadvantageparticularlyAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peopleas well aspeople from non-English speaking backgroundsand people with disability.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Experienceworkingcollaboratively with team members and otherorganisationsundertakingsystemic lawreformpolicyand advocacy work and deliveringcommunity legal education.
Essential: Senior Solicitor and Practice lead
- Qualified to practice as a solicitor in NSWholds or is eligible to hold a current practicing certificate and at least4yearspost-admission experience inrelevant areas oflaw.
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative accept responsibility and work with limited supervision providing advice and conducting caseworkin relation to policing matters.
- Capacity to supervise junior solicitors conducting policing and generalist legal work.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct community legal education policy and law reformworkincludingidentifyingsystemic issues and drafting policy and law reform submissions.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate and negotiate effectively with clientsand relevant government and communityorganisations.
- Demonstrated ability to work with clientsexperiencing disadvantage and systemic barriers particularlyFirst Nationspeople.
- Commitment to theobjectivesof Community LegalCentres.
Conditions
Solicitor:Salary and benefits: $117002 to$138863p.a. (pro rata for part time) depending on qualifications and experience.
Senior Solicitor Practice Lead:
Salary and benefits: $127841 to $144878 p.a. (pro rata for part time) depending on qualifications and experience.
Superannuation and annual leave loading are paid in addition tothisand salary packaging is available.
Redfern Legal Centre offers a 35-hour working week time in lieu options and a paid end of year closure of two weeks (including public holidays) on top of four weeks annual prioritise staff wellbeing through external debrief supervision a generous training and professional development budget and flexible working conditions.
