Youll sit at the intersection of AI data engineering and macroeconomicsbuilding the next generation of data-driven research that shapes one of Australias most trusted market voices.
The DataX and Economics teams sit within WIB DDAI (Data Digital & AI) and deliver data-driven products and insights to external institutional clients while Economics provides macroeconomic research and forecasts that shapes Westpacs market voice.
If youre a highly experienced Data Science SME who is a hands-on builder and thrives on translating complex ideas into real-world production-grade solutionsthis is your platform to shine!
Working within the DataX Economics partnership youll leverage shared data assets modern tooling and scalable platforms to deliver high-impact outcomes for institutional clients and internal research.
Day to Day Focus
- Build and deploy econometric machine learning (ML) models for forecasting nowcasting and scenario analysis
- Develop AI-enabled tools (NLP automation insight generation) to transform research workflows into production
- Translate economic hypotheses into robust quantitative frameworks
- Work hands-on with macro transaction and alternative datasets to unlock insights at scale
- Drive end-to-end model lifecyclefrom experimentation to production validation and governance
- Present insights to both technical and executive audiences
Key Essentials
- Tertiary qualifications in Computer Science
- Proven experience delivering production-grade data science / ML solutions (not just POCs or academic work)
- Strong background in statistical modelling and time-series analysis
- Deep capability in Python (scikit-learn statsmodels PyTorch/TensorFlow)
- Deep track record building scalable models and data-driven products
- Ability to operate in complex enterprise environments with strong stakeholder engagement
- Economics econometrics or financial markets exposure
- Experience building NLP / LLM-driven solutions complemented by solid Cloud ML platforms (Azure ML SageMaker or similar)
- Experience working alongside research strategy or domain experts
- Youre curious commercial and delivery-focused and you get energy from turning ambiguity into structured scalable solutions
- Youre a hands-on problem solver who shipsnot just experiments and you communicate complex ideas with clarity and influence
