One of the best places to start when working in the media industry is as a Production Assistant. A production assistant can have many different responsibilities which puts you in a great position to learn about all of the different departments.
You have to be open to anything as a PA and you have to be willing to work hard. If you are a hard-working PA it is more than likely that someone will notice and it will be easier for you to get promoted. The goal is to ensure production gets on smoothly and problem-free.
Here are the job functions:
Helping prepare the set with lights props equipment etc.
Setting up the shoot location in a strategic way
Assisting wardrobe directors camera people and other crew members
Printing and distributing paperwork
Escort actors talent models around the area
Conduct crowd control by putting up signs directing pedestrians away from set lock down sets etc.
Act as a runner distributing messages or items within crew and cast
Perform administrative work
Undertake errands as assigned
Handling transport for equipment talent and crew
Preparing and packing items
Making sure the set is clean and tidy at all times
Going on supply runs
Calling locations and a variety of suppliers
Set out chairs and tables on set
Creative direction research
Assisting with creating storyboards/mood boards
Negotiating with suppliers
Adding suppliers to database
Contacting potential suppliers
Compiling supplier pricing
Assisting with project budgets
Coordinating payments to suppliers
Supporting with the maintenance of the warehouse and production inventory
Solving last minute problems
Assisting with post-production coordination
Getting project feedback from suppliers
Assisting suppliers to sign agreements
Skills:
Organization/Multitasking: This is probably the number one skill that you have to possess if you want to be a production assistant. You have to be ready and willing to balance a multitude of jobs at the same time. If you dont enjoy paperwork running errands and working on multiple things at once then being a production assistant is not the job for you.
Strong Computer Skills: As a production assistant a lot of your work will be spent working on a computer. You need to be comfortable trouble-shooting computer issues and you need to be able to make your way around programs like Google Workspace and Zoho One with ease.
Communication: As the production assistant you will be a point of contact for some of the crew and you need to make sure that you are communicating with all of the appropriate people and getting the right messages to the right people. Be clear with instructions and emails and make sure that you are understood dont just assume that people have received your emails or calls follow up with people.
