Overview

Key responsibilities

• Providing academic counseling to students to help them achieve educational and personal growth.
• Assessing students abilities interests and educational goals to develop personalized academic plans.
• Assisting students in understanding degree requirements academic policies and available resources.
• Conducting workshops and seminars on study skills time management and academic success strategies.
• Collaborating with faculty to address students academic performance and progress.
• Identifying and addressing barriers to student success such as mental health concerns or learning disabilities.
• Assisting students in developing career plans and exploring potential job opportunities.
• Providing referrals to support services such as tutoring financial aid or mental health counseling.
• Maintaining accurate and confidential student records.
• Participating in departmental meetings and professional development activities.
• Staying updated on current trends and best practices in academic counseling and higher education.
• Contributing to the development and implementation of student support programs and initiatives.
• Collaborating with other campus departments to foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
• Participating in student orientation programs and academic advising events.
• Contributing to the overall success and retention of students through proactive intervention and support.

Required qualifications

• Bachelors degree in Counseling Education Psychology or a related field; Masters degree preferred.
• Proven experience in academic counseling or advising within a higher education setting.
• Strong knowledge of academic policies degree requirements and educational resources.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively with diverse student populations.
• Understanding of career development theories assessments and vocational resources.
• Ability to assess student needs and provide appropriate support and referrals.
• Knowledge of laws and regulations related to student privacy and confidentiality such as FERPA.
• Proficiency in utilizing student information systems and academic advising technology.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate with faculty staff and external stakeholders to support student success.
• Strong organizational problemsolving and time management skills.
• Adherence to ethical standards and professional codes of conduct in counseling and advising.
• Commitment to diversity equity and inclusion in supporting student development and success.
• Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and integrity.
• Willingness to engage in ongoing professional development and training related to academic counseling.
• Previous experience working with diverse student populations and multicultural competence.
