Weekly meetings are organized in a coworking space in Santiago de Chile as well as punctual strategic gatherings.

    Purpose of the Position

    The External Affairs Director develops the crosscutting public policy advocacy strategy leads and guide the development and implementation of one or more strategies to achieve the Conservancys goals through interaction with governmental agencies mainly at national level non governmental organizations multilateral agencies and/or the corporate sector.

    S/he leads a team and works within a broader interdisciplinary team to serve as a subject matter expert and advisor on complex and strategic issues focusing in the interaction with key stakeholders at national level.
    S/he liaises with TNCs global strategy teams Science and Field Conservation staff other External Affairs departments and with TNCs Operating Units to our further conservation goals policies and strategy.

    The position will report to the Business Unit Chile Director.


    Key Responsibilities

    S/he identifies conservation policy evaluates the potential for strategic partnerships and develops and implements strategies to influence public policy and public funding for conservation at a large scale national and/or global level.
    The person hired will also attend virtual and some presential global policy meetings and events and coordinate with TNC global policy and external affairs. S/he coordinates the work with the regional policy team and ensures that they share policy work and planning as required.
    S/he serves as a subject matter expert on key national policy matters and programs; on engaging partners in strategic and transformative collaborations and advises BU leadership on strategic options for the Conservancys involvement. S/he also develops and implements national legislative and/or international policy initiatives to advance the BU and Conservancys conservation goals. This includes advocating for national conservation policies and programs cultivating partnerships and launching specific initiatives of importance to the country BU and TNC.

    • May supervise a team of administrative and/or professional staff.
    • Applies a diversified knowledge of practices to support Conservancy strategies and lead policy influence and advocacy.
    • Supports program objectives by working in a complex matrix organizational environment and works collaboratively within a crossfunctional interdisciplinary team.
    • Develops and maintains strategic relationships and works effectively with corporate government community and nongovernmental organization partners seeking to guide a coherence in the TNC engagement strategy.
    • Develops policy and position papers talking points and analysis.
    • Collects data reports and background documents for internal policy development capacitybuilding and monitoring the efficiency of policy instruments.
    • Participates in national fora and working groups in support of global and regional policy commitments on climate and biodiversity.
    • Participates in international fora and delegations as required.
    • Briefs and resources TNC senior management on policy objectives and goals.
    • Acts independently within broad program goals.
    • Contributes to and supports multiyear fundraising strategies and goals.
    • Participates in negotiations for complex high profile or sensitive agreements.
    • Participates in the development of systemic change analysis and direction focusing on policy advocacy as lever for systemic change and promotes articulation between the crosscutting policy strategy and the theories of change driving conservation programs in iconic landscapes and in support of TNCS 2030 goals.
    • Promotes the integration of crosscutting policy strategies in proposals and projects for scaling up actions and promoting transformative change and participates in designing leading and guiding project proposals and project development regarding policy advocacy .
    • May need to travel domestically and/or internationally.

    Requirements and competences to work with us

    Education

    • Bachelors degree in political science environmental policy law social policy management or other relevant field
    • Masters degree appreciated.
    • Fluency in English and Spanish.

    Experience

    • 5 years of government relations or corporate sector experience or equivalent combination education/experience.
    • Analytical and project management experience. Particularly experience in successfully developing and implementing complex projects in an unstructured environment.
    • Supervisory experience
    • Demonstrated experience in successfully developing and implementing complex negotiations and position documents with team members in a matrixed environment
    • Experience presenting to and communicating with management and senior representatives within the corporate sector.
    • Multilingual skills and multicultural experience appreciated.

    Knowledge and Skills

    • Knowledge of environmental programs and policies.
    • Proven communication and presentation skills.
    • Experience developing and writing talking points and developing presentations.
    • Experience with ethics and compliance protocols and objectives.
    • Crisp writing style and ability to summarize complex ideas and present them to a variety of lay audiences.
    • Highly organized and detail oriented.
    • Excellent team player with experience working in multidisciplinary groups using influence and interpersonal skills listening diplomacy and tact to build strong relationships with governments corporations partners donors volunteers and all levels of staff.
