BACKGROUND: Founded in 1933 the International Rescue Committee is a leading non-sectarian non-profit organization providing emergency relief protection rehabilitation assistance resettlement services and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. Domestically our 29 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food shelter and clothing and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.

SCOPE OF WORK: The Youth Programs Intern will work closely with the IRC School Specialists and Mentoring Specialist to support youth and their families as they work to achieve their goals related to academic and vocational areas of interest and social integration. This may include coordination with schools administrative tasks and transportation assistance for various field trips and school related activities.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Attend Volunteer/Intern Orientation.
  • Contribute to the planning and coordination of various activities such as after-school tutoring college prep workshops and monthly outings or field trips. Most work is from 9a-5p with occasional evenings or weekend activities or appointments in the early mornings for things such as school bus orientations.
  • Administrative support (phone calls filing data entry collected signed paperwork etc.)
  • Provide transportation for clients and their families to appointments.
  • Assist with preschool and school enrollments. Duties include completing school enrollment paperwork collecting documents obtaining parental signatures and delivering forms to schools.
  • Be sensitive to the differences of clients. Respect their beliefs and values which may differ from yours.
  • Record hours and submit completed timesheet for each month via the IRCs online Volunteer Dashboard.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Pursuing an undergraduate or masters degree
  • Strong interpersonal skills and interest in working with the refugee community
  • Occasional evening or weekend availability
  • Ownership of a car and a valid drivers license and car insurance
  • Willingness to be flexible and accommodating to client needs
  • Ability to converse in a client language is strongly preferred

This position is unpaid and reports to the Youth Programs Supervisor.
