Summary:Writing Center Peer Tutors support Ellsworth Community College students with writing assignments and speeches in the ECC Library. Tutors assist students by providing guidance with grammar punctuation proofreading formatting and organization while helping them develop their own ideas and improve their writing skills. Peer tutors facilitate discussion and guide students through the writing process without simply providing answers. Tutors are typically current ECC students who have successfully completed courses such as Composition 105 or 106 and Speech (subject availability may vary by semester).

Essential Job Duties:
  • Tutors guide one or more students in understanding a skill or concept.
  • Tutors must be willing and flexible to assist other students during scheduled hours who are in the library and need help.
  • Tutors may communicate suggestions about improvements to the Writing Center peer tutor program improvements or about any difficulties or problems to the director of student success.
  • Tutors should refer ECC students who identify a specific need regarding a disability to the learning services specialist.
  • Tutors must check their student e-mail regularly for announcements and communications about tutoring not less than every other day.
  • Tutors must use the online work record software Paycor for each session and approve their online timecard by thedeadline associated with each pay period.
Abilities:
  • Successful completion of a course he/she will be tutoring (Passing grade of B or higher)
  • Maintain good academic standing i.e. cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher is required.
  • Exceptions to the above require prior approval and are at the discretion of the director of student success.
  • Must legally protect all students right to privacy and never identify who he/she is tutoring nor make any comments to others about the student he/she is tutoring.
  • Communicate any schedule changes concerns a timely manner.
  • Check iavalley e-mail account daily or every other day.
  • Be at work on time leave on time and treat every student with respect.
  • Comfortable in interacting with all students regardless of their academic abilities nationalities races ancestries age religious beliefs sexes marital status and sexual orientation.

Education and Experience:HS Diploma or equivalent
