Summary:

Welds metal parts with gas welding equipment as specified by layout welding diagram or work order by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Reads and interprets fabrication prints or product specifications to determine sequence and methods of fabricating welding or assembling structural steel products.
2. Positions parts in jigs or fixtures on bench or floor or clamps parts together along layout marks.
3. Selects torch torch tip filler rod and flux according to welding chart specifications or type and thickness of metal.
4. Connects regulator valves and hoses to oxygen and fuel gas cylinders and welding torch.
5. Turns regulator valves to activate flow of gases lights torch and adjusts gas mixture and pressure to obtain desired flame.
6. Holds torch at proper angle to metal and guides along weld joint applying filler rod to molten area to form weld.
7. Examines weld for bead size and other specifications.
8. Repairs broken or cracked metal objects fills holes and builds up metal parts.
9. Applies flux to workpiece instead of filler rod.
10. Preheats workpiece in furnace or with torch.
11. Lays out positions and tack welds workpieces.
12. Welds long vertical or overhead weld lines.
13. Scarfs or grooves weld prior to applying filler metal.
14. Chips or grinds off excess weld slag or spatter.
15. Cleans or degreases parts.
16. Maintains clean workspace.
17. Scans job worked time into data collection system.
18. Perform other related duties as required

Education and/or Experience

• High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
• 1-3 months related experience and/or training; equivalent combined

Travel

This position requires minimal to no travel

Computer Skills

• Demonstrated proficiency with MS Excel Word PowerPoint and Access

Other Requirements

• AWS Certificate
• Forklift Operator License
• Crane Operator License

• Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions short correspondence and memos
• Ability to write simple correspondence
• Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers clients and other employees of the organization
• Ability to add subtract multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers common fractions and decimals
• Ability to compute rate ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions
• Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations
