Job Summary
The Smithsonian Institution is the worlds largest museum education and research complex with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in the National Museum of African Art Museum (NMAFA).
The Visitor Services Manager is responsible for planning coordinating and overseeing daily operations in the museums public spaces including volunteer recruitment training evaluation and management; disseminating information to staff and visitors; supporting events and programming teams to create a positive onsite visitor experience; and performing related financial and administrative duties.
In this position you will:
- Plan coordinate and implement all elements of visitor services consisting of operations policies procedures and protocols accessibility audience evaluations and other activities to provide services and assistance to the visiting public.
- Manage front and back-end requirements supporting internships and/or fellowships at the museum.
Develop and deliver training programs to enhance the skill and effectiveness of staff and volunteers who interact with museum visitors.
- Requires career/career-conditional status or eligibility.
- Males born after 12/31/59 must be registered with Selective Service.

Experience:You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service. For this position specialized experience is defined asplanning coordinating and implementing audience-centered visitor services and engagement strategies for public programs within a museum cultural institution or similar organization; managing academic appointment programs; and leading community engagement activities and volunteer docent programs in a public-facing organization.
