Purpose:
Under the supervision of the Vigo County Judge the Division Five Court Reporter is responsible for performing the duties and responsibilities as required by the Vigo County Superior Court Division Five for both civil and criminal proceedings.
Examples of Duties
- Records and transcribes verbatim record of court proceedings; types transcripts of hearings and trials.
- Ensures recording equipment software and sound equipment is in proper working order.
- Prepares court orders; types jury instructions.
- Reviews incoming Judgment Orders.
- Marks and maintains all exhibits introduced in court proceedings.
- Schedules court hearings and prepares files for court hearings.
- Makes and updates entries in case management system.
- Handles Special Judge cases.
- Preserves recordings evidence and transcripts.
- Answers telephone providing information and assistance and takes and distributes messages.
- Works closely with the general public and various other departments in the County.
- Performs other related essential duties as required.
Minimum Training and Experience:
- High School diploma or GED; supplemented by three to five years priorexperience in a legal or courtroom setting; or any equivalent combinationof education training and experience which provides the requisite knowledgeskills and abilities for this job.
- No special licensure or certification is required.
Minimum Physical and Mental Abilities:
Physical Requirements
- Ability to operate court recording equipment and transcriber; ability tooperate a variety of automated office machines including computercalculator copier telephone systems fax machines etc.; ability tocoordinate hands and eyes in using automated office equipment.
- Ability to exert physical effort in sedentary to light work involving routine.
- Carrying of files and exhibits stooping kneeling crouching and reaching;
- Tasks require visual perception and discrimination.
Mental Ability
- Ability to add subtract multiply divide calculate decimals and percentagesand measure data.
Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of restricted information with a provenhistory of integrity.
- Ability to comprehend and correctly use a variety of informational documentsincluding exhibits court orders motions electronic and taped recordings andother reports and records.
- Ability to comprehend a variety of reference books and manuals includingJTS Handbook Court Reporter Handbook policies and procedures computemanuals/handbooks etc.
- Ability to prepare transcripts orders forms jury instructions other courtdocuments memorandum correspondence and other job related documentsusing prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuationgrammar dictation and style.
- Ability to utilize departmental software including JTS WordPerfect Wordand others.
- Ability to accurately record and deliver information and meet deadlines.
- Ability to perceive and discriminate sound.
- Ability to make independent judgments in absence of management usecommon sense and utilize the principles of rational systems in theperformance of tasks.
- Ability to learn and understand legal terminology language principles andtechniques; ability to expound on knowledge of topics related to primaryoffices.
- Ability to maintain personal composure and tactfully handle difficultsituations and interpret questions correctly; ability to behave in a friendlyunderstanding helpful and professional manner with coworkers supervisorsand the general public.
- Ability to advise and interpret the application of policies procedures andstandards to specific situations; ability to explain demonstrate and clarify toothers within well established policies procedures and standards.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with attorneysJudges court personnel clerks other county personnel and the generalpublic; ability to speak with and before others with poise voice control andconfidence using correct English.
