Job Summary

Introduction
The Maryland Department of Labor Division of Unemployment Insurance is seeking qualified and motivated individuals for the full-time merit position of Unemployment Insurance Professional I. This recruitment will be used to fill current and future vacancies within the division and an eligible list of candidates will be maintained for one year after the announcements closing date.

This position plays a critical role in supporting Maryland residents by ensuring unemployment insurance claims are processed accurately efficiently and with strong commitment to customer service. The Unemployment Insurance Professional I will help employers understand and access the services and support available through the states Unemployment Insurance program.

This position is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule of up to two (2) days per week contingent upon the successful completion of training and meeting all applicable telework requirements in accordance with agency policy.

Main Purpose of Job
This position is responsible for conducting interviews with individuals applying for Unemployment Insurance benefits in order to obtain and verify information needed to process claims in accordance with established laws policies and procedures. The purpose of this work is to ensure accurate and timely determination of eligibility while providing high-quality customer-focused service. This role supports the proper administration and distribution of unemployment benefits and contributes to maintaining the economic stability of the State.
POSITION DUTIES
This position duties consist of but not limited to the following:
  • Provide excellent customer service while answering questions and completing applications for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • Explain and interpret the laws governing unemployment insurance to employers claimants and the public in a professional and courteous manner over the phone. Address issues related to general eligibility appeals procedures severance pay holiday pay confirmation of return to work and other relevant topics.
  • Collect and enter information to complete a claimants telephone application for unemployment insurance benefits.
  • Communicate with other states via the UIMAIL-ICON Network when necessary to handle complex interstate claims.
  • Ensure prompt and accurate payment of benefits by reviewing claim history to identify any incidents of unemployment insurance fraud.
  • Identify investigate and resolve problems related to claims for unemployment insurance benefits to keep individual claims up to date.
  • Review the information provided by claimants and employers to ensure that the correct employers are associated with the unemployment claim.
  • Verify the accuracy of the claim once the filing process is complete
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Four years of experience in a public/or private agency rendering and/or determining eligibility for a Human Service Program or other programs.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

  • Experience with benefits review and determination
  • Experience working with Microsoft Excel and Word
  • (6) months of experience processing claims.
  • Experience in call center
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Personnel employed in this classification will have access to federal tax information and must undergo a state and FBI criminal background check as a condition of employment.


All candidates are subject to a background check against files maintained by the Division of Unemployment Insurance (MD Labor/DUI) to determine whether any monies are owed to MD Labor/DUI as a result of unemployment insurance overpayment/fraud. Any unpaid debt may have an impact on whether or not a candidate is offered employment.
