Systems Engineer II – Mass Properties & Bill of Materials
Brevard County, FL - USA
Job Summary
Application close date:
Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed. At Blue Origin we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. Were working to develop reusable safe and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety collaboration and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit which develops Blue Origins Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origins mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface. We are looking for a Systems Engineer II to support mass properties engineering for the Mk1 Lunar Cargo Lander. This role owns the day-to-day maintenance and analysis of the mass-properties Bill of Materials (BOM) supports mass property predictions and tracking across the vehicle lifecycle and assists with physical center of gravity (CG) measurements and verification activities. Youll work closely with design manufacturing integration and test teams to ensure the vehicles mass center of gravity and moments of inertia are understood tracked and reported accurately at every program milestone.
Mass properties data underpins nearly every other engineering discipline on the vehicle from structural margins to guidance and control to propellant budgeting. As a Systems Engineer II on this team you wont just track mass youll actively work with Fluids Avionics Thermal GN&C and Structures to find where mass can come out of the vehicle and partner with manufacturing on trades that balance metrics for the best cost to performance ratio for our customers. Your work directly supports program-level decisions and keeps the vehicle within its mass and CG requirements throughout design build and test.
Beyond tracking and reporting this role is expected to dig into subsystem designs to find and drive mass reduction opportunities. Youll build close working partnerships with system leads championing minimum-mass solutions and partnering with manufacturing teams on trade studies that balance mass cost and producibility.
This is a strong fit for an engineer who wants hands-on ownership of a critical vehicle integration discipline is comfortable getting into the design weeds with other subsystems and enjoys cross-functional collaboration hardware exposure and design reviews.
What Youll Do
- Maintain and update the mass-properties Bill of Materials (BOM) ensuring component-level mass CG and moment of inertia data is accurate traceable and current as the design matures
- Support mass property roll-ups and margin tracking against allocations flagging discrepancies or growth trends to the responsible engineering leads
- Assist in planning and executing vehicle-level CG measurements including coordination of test setup data collection and reduction of results
- Reconcile predicted vs. measured mass properties and help drive root-cause investigations when discrepancies arise
- Generate routine mass properties status reports and present findings at design reviews and program milestones
- Coordinate with subsystem leads and component owners to collect updated weight and CG data including CAD-derived and as-built/as-weighed values
- Partner with Fluids Avionics Thermal GN&C and Structures teams to identify evaluate and drive mass reduction opportunities across the vehicle
- Act as a champion for minimum-mass design solutions bringing a mass-conscious perspective into cross-functional design discussions and trade studies
- Deep-dive into subsystem and component designs (CAD drawings analyses) to identify mass growth risks over-design margins and reduction opportunities
- Support mass trade studies with manufacturing teams weighing options for material substitution process changes and design simplification against cost schedule and producibility
- Support development and upkeep of mass properties tools templates and databases used for tracking and reporting
- Participate in vehicle weighing operations and other physical measurement activities including instrumentation setup and basic data analysis
- Help maintain configuration control of mass properties documentation in accordance with program processes
- Document assumptions methods and uncertainty/margin in mass property estimates
What Were Looking For
Required:
- Bachelors degree in Aerospace Engineering Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline
- 13 years of relevant experience working in aerospace.
- Strong working proficiency with CAD tools (e.g. CATIA NX SolidWorks Creo) with the ability to navigate and interpret subsystem designs and assemblies not just extract summary data
- Solid understanding of mass properties concepts: center of gravity moments/products of inertia mass margin/contingency management
- Comfort engaging directly with design and analysis details to identify mass reduction opportunities including reading drawings models and structural/thermal/fluids analyses well enough to ask informed questions
- Strong attention to detail and comfort working with large evolving datasets changing configurations and rapid customer responses.
- Proficiency with Excel Matlab or Python or similar tools for data tracking and reporting
- Clear written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work cross-functionally and present technical findings including mass trade recommendations to a multi-disciplinary audience
Preferred:
- Exposure to BOM-based mass properties tracking on a flight vehicle spacecraft or similar complex system
- Experience supporting or observing physical weighing/CG test operations or rigging and other high criticality vehicle movements. Bonus for experience with critical lift plans
- Experience supporting design or mass trade studies in partnership with manufacturing or production engineering teams
- Understanding of how mass properties data flows into and interacts with Space Vehicle design along with Fluids Avionics Thermal GN&C and Structures analyses
- Basic scripting/automation skills (Python MATLAB or VBA) for data processing
