Job Summary
GARNER VA CLINIC and CLAYTON VA CLINIC-The Supervisory Medical Support Assistant (MSA) position serves as the direct line supervisor for all Medical Support Assistant (MSA) and Lead Medical Support Assistant Staff and is a foundational role within the VHA Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) initiative to include all interdisciplinary clinics call centers and all other areas that support the initiative. Patient care is delivered in a team based model known as the teamlet.

Basic Requirements:
- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- English Language Proficiency:MSAs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005 Part II Chapter 3 Section A paragraph 3.j.
- Experience and Education
- High school diploma or transcript (including homeschooling)
- General Education Development (GED) certificate
- Proficiency certificate issued by a State or Territorial Board or Department of Education
- Post-high school education
- You do not have one of the education levels listed above but you were in the Medical Support Assistant occupation (GS-0679) on a permanent appointment with the Department of Veterans Affairs as of February 5 2026 meeting all qualification requirements as part of the grandfathering provision
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations:
Supervisory Medical Support Assistant GS-07.
(1) Experience. One year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade.
(2) Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs).
In addition to the experience above the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
(a) Ability to provide the full range of administrative and supervisory duties in a patient support setting which includes assignment of work performance evaluations selection of staff and recommendation of awards and/or advancements.
(b) Ability to collaborate communicate and demonstrate customer service and interpersonal skills with internal and external customers to ensure quality/continuity of care and ensure compliance with established policies and regulations.
(c) Ability to provide briefings orientations staff development and training related to administrative functions in a patient support setting.(d) Ability to delegate authority evaluate and oversee people and programs accomplish program goals and adapt to changing priorities.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual based on prior work experience or military service experience.
