JOB TITLE: SCHOOL BUS DRIVER

DEPARTMENT:School/Transportation

GRADE: Hourly rate based on Grade 51

FLSA: Non-exempt

REPORTS TO: School Bus Coordinator/Transportation Director

SUPERVISES: None

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:10 months (part-time)

QUALIFICATIONS:Graduation from High School or equivalency

Must be at least eighteen (18) years old with six (6) months driving

experience

Must possess and maintain a current North Carolina commercial driver

license with proper endorsements and a current Bus Drivers Pocket Card

Must pass DOT drug and alcohol testing

Must never have been convicted of a DWI offense

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. This list is representative not exhaustive. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  1. Maintains proficiency in driving skills
  2. Is responsible for completing all reports relating to transportation
  3. Ensures safety and care of students boarding riding and departing the school bus
  4. Maintains a high standard of student conduct at all times
  5. Discharges students only at the authorized school or bus stop locations
  6. Transports only authorized students
  7. Reports infractions of school bus safety rules to the principal or designee
  8. Obeys all traffic laws and school bus regulations while operating the school bus
  9. Performs daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections; complies with standards of bus cleanliness
  10. Operates the school bus on the assigned route(s) and schedule as provided by the Transportation Department
  11. Attends bus safety meetings
  12. Informs TIMS Coordinator of any students added or deleted from route which may necessitate a change in route or bus stop
  13. Accepts responsibility for securing the school bus before leaving the vehicle at the conclusion of a run or route
  14. Accepts responsibility for reporting observable mechanical defects or failures on the school bus
  15. Maintains acceptable relations with parents/guardians of students transported and with school personnel
  16. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor

PHYSICAL AND COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS

The major physical and cognitive requirements listed below are applicable to theSchool Bus Driverjob classification within Bertie County Schools.

Work in this classification is consideredmedium physical workrequiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally up to 20 pounds of force frequently and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Must be able to:

  • Walk lift reach stoop stand grasp balance climb kneel and crouch
  • Work in various inside and outside environments being subjected to weather changes noise vibrations job hazards and atmospheric conditions
  • Use visual acuity required for depth perception and color perception
  • Visually inspect small defects and/or small parts
  • Use a variety of measuring devices
  • Assemble or fabricate parts at or within arms length
  • Operate machines motor vehicles hand tools and job-specific equipment and tools; determine the accuracy and thoroughness of work
  • Observe general surroundings and activities
  • Hear sufficiently to accurately perceive information at normally spoken word levels
  • Use communication by means of spoken word to express or exchange ideas
  • Safely work in situations of exposure to bloodborne pathogens which may require specialized personal protective equipment
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions
