Job Description
Orbital is seeking an experienced Structural Engineer to support the execution of an Asset Integrity and Asset Management program at a client facility in Granite City IL. This is a field-based engineering position embedded at the clients site focused on structural evaluation repair engineering and long-term asset management planning.
In this role you will serve as Orbitals on-site structural engineering resource working with a high degree of independence while receiving technical oversight and managerial support from Orbitals office-based project team. You will be responsible for translating inspection findings into sound engineering solutions and supporting the client in making informed risk-based decisions about their structural assets.
This position is well suited for an engineer who is equally comfortable at a desk reviewing calculations and at a facility reviewing conditions firsthand - someone who takes ownership of the engineering work and sees it through from assessment to solution.
Essential Functions
Structural Engineering & Assessment
- Serve as the primary engineering resource for structural asset evaluations applying engineering judgment to assess condition identify deficiencies and prioritize corrective actions.
- Review and interpret structural inspection findings generated by the programs inspection team translating field data into engineering evaluations and recommendations.
- Perform site visits to structures as needed to verify conditions gather supplemental information and inform engineering decisions not as an inspector but as the engineer responsible for the solution.
- Prepare engineering reports condition assessments and technical recommendations for review by the client and Orbitals project team.
Repair Engineering & Design
- Develop repair scopes and capital recommendations based on engineering evaluations condition assessments and client priorities.
- Prepare calculations designs and repair drawings in support of identified repair and improvement projects.
- Coordinate with Orbitals office engineering team to ensure repair solutions are technically sound code-compliant and aligned with client requirements.
- Provide engineering support during repair execution as needed answering RFIs reviewing submittals and resolving field conditions.
Asset Management & Planning
- Support long-term asset management planning by contributing engineering expertise to condition assessments maintenance strategies and capital planning initiatives.
- Maintain accurate records of engineering evaluations calculations and repair histories to support Asset Management databases and long-term tracking.
- Identify recurring deficiency patterns and develop proactive engineering recommendations to support the clients long-term asset reliability goals.
- Contribute to the continued growth and improvement of Orbitals Asset Management and Repair Services capabilities.
Safety Quality & Compliance
- Comply with all Orbital client OSHA MSHA and site-specific safety requirements.
- Complete all work in accordance with applicable codes standards and Orbitals Quality Management System (QMS).
- Participate in pre-job planning job hazard analyses (JHAs) and safety meetings as required.
- Promote consistency repeatability and continuous improvement in engineering execution and documentation quality.
Team & Client Coordination
- Serve as the primary on-site structural engineering point of contact for the clients operations maintenance and engineering teams.
- Maintain strong working relationships with client personnel and Orbitals field- and office-based project leadership.
- Communicate engineering findings recommendations and project status clearly to both engineering and non-engineering audiences.
- Support proposal development estimating and scope definition as needed.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Civil or Structural Engineering from an accredited college or university.
- Minimum five (5) years of professional structural engineering experience in industrial environments.
- Experience with structural steel reinforced concrete masonry and/or foundation systems.
- Experience in asset-intensive industries such as power generation oil and gas refining chemical processing manufacturing steel mining or materials processing.
- Demonstrated ability to independently develop engineering evaluations repair designs and capital recommendations from inspection and condition assessment data.
- Ability to work independently in a field-based role while maintaining effective communication with an office-based support team.
- Ability to potentially access structures at elevated heights in confined spaces and in active industrial environments as needed to support engineering evaluations.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to prepare clear calculations technical reports and recommendations for varied audiences.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and engineering software; experience with STAAD or equivalent structural analysis software a plus.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability and intent to obtain licensure.
- Experience supporting Asset Management Asset Integrity Mechanical Integrity (MI) or Risk-Based Inspection (RBI) programs.
- Familiarity with digital inspection platforms and asset management systems.
- Experience providing engineering support during repair and construction execution.
Location Note
This is a full-time on-site position located at a client facility in Granite City IL within the St. Louis metropolitan area. This is not a remote or hybrid role. Compensation is based on market data and internal equity and may vary depending on the candidates qualifications and experience.
