Job Description

*** This is a stipended position and is only open to current eligible licensed BPS employees whose current job status allows them to participate in this opportunity.

Compensation is based solely on actual hours worked and reported. Instructors are required to accurately track and submit timesheets for all instructional preparation grading communication and other approved course-related work. Failure to submit required timesheets may result in delayed or reduced payment. ***

Reports to: The Office of Multilingual and Multicultural Education

Terms: Candidates must complete the mandatory training sessions held by DESE.

Training dates are listed below. All trainings are delivered via Zoom and require no travel.

Both New and Returning Instructors are required to complete an online module BEFORE the Zoom trainings. You can find more information about the modules and registration deadlines on the registration page.

New Instructors

If you have never taught the SEI Endorsement Course OR if you last taught the course prior to SY2021-22 sign up for New Instructor Training.

  • New Instructor #1: Wednesday Aug 12 2026 9:00 am-12:30 pm.
  • New Instructor #2: Saturday Sep 12 2026 9:00 am-12:30 pm.
  • New Instructor #3: Saturday Dec 5 2026 9:00 am-12:30 pm.

Returning Instructors

If you have taught the course since SY2021-22 but did NOT attend the SEI Instructor training in 2024 or 2025 and are NOT on the 2025-26 Approved SEI Course Instructors list sign up for Returning Instructor Training.

  • Returning Instructor #1: Saturday Sep 19 2026 9:00 am-11:30 pm online.
  • Returning Instructor #2: Saturday Dec 12 2026 9:00 am-11:30 pm online.

  • Best Practices Sharing Session for Current SEI Instructors - Friday Sep:00-5:30pm Online (ZOOM). This optional session is for informational purposes only and does NOT qualify participants to teach the SEI Endorsement Course.

BPS Office Multilingual and Multicultural Education (OMME) is seeking to stipend RETELL instructors for the educator course and administrator courses. The RETELL instructor must have a commitment to address the persistent gap in academic proficiency experienced by multilingual students. At the heart of this initiative are training and licensure requirements for the Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) Endorsement which core academic and career vocational teachers of multilinguals and principals/assistant principals and supervisors/directors who supervise or evaluate such teachers must obtain.

OMME seeks instructors for both SEI Endorsement Teacher and SEI Administrator courses during SY26-27. Courses may be taught remotely via zoom or be held on-site at a BPS school.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

A Rethinking Equity in the Teaching of English Language Learners (RETELL) Instructor is responsible for:

  • Creating and managing the Zoom link for assigned course sections when applicable.
  • Delivering the DESE SEI Endorsement course in accordance with DESE requirements and course expectations.
  • Facilitating all scheduled course sessions and maintaining a positive learning environment for participants.
  • Taking and maintaining attendance records for each live course session.
  • Communicating with registered participants regarding course expectations assignments schedules and attendance.
  • Grading assignments and providing feedback through the Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Monitoring participant progress and supporting successful course completion.
  • Utilizing DESE-provided course materials including the syllabus slide decks and other instructional resources.
  • Completing all instructor responsibilities required by DESE OMME and Boston Public Schools.
  • Maintaining accurate records of all hours worked and submitting timesheets in accordance with OMME and BPS payroll deadlines.
  • Recording and reporting all instructional preparation grading participant communication attendance LMS management and other approved course-related hours in order to receive compensation.

Saturdays: 9:00AM-12:00PM - 11/21 12/5 12/12 12/19 1/9 1/16 1/23 1/30 2/6 2/13 (back up class date used if needed)

Teacher Course Instructor Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Two (2) years experience teaching ESL and/or Bilingual education in K-12 setting or equivalent or related expertise OR two years of teaching experience in a K-12 setting and successful completion of the SEI full course.
  • Two (2) years minimum experience providing professional development to teachers either in a university or professional development setting.
  • Masters degree or higher in educational or closely related field.
  • Experience in or familiarity with online teaching to adults and competency in the use of related technology.
  • Completed mandatory training sessions held by DESE and be on the DESE Approved SEI Course Instructors list

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fluency in a language other than English; or experience studying another language or living abroad
  • Knowledge of the WIDA 2020 Standards
  • Knowledge of Massachusetts State Frameworks
  • MA CAGS or higher degree in any of the following or closely related fields:
    • Applied Linguistics
    • English as a Second Language (ESOL TESL)
    • Language Literacy and Culture

Administrator Course Instructor Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Two (2) years minimum of supervisory experience
  • Experience in a district with ELs
  • Two (2) years experience teaching ESL Bilingual education or SEI in K-12 setting or equivalent or related expertise.
  • Two (2) years minimum experience providing professional development to teachers either in a university or professional development setting
  • MA CAGS or higher degree in any of the following or closely related fields:
    • Applied Linguistics
    • English as a Second Language (ESOL TESL)
    • Language Literacy and Culture
  • Completed mandatory training sessions held by DESE and be on the DESE Approved SEI Course Instructors list

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fluency in a language other than English; or experience studying another language or living abroad

  • Course and/or PD evaluations from past professional development (no more than 2 pages)
  • A transcript from the institution where the applicant earned his/her highest degree
  • PD/course or lesson plan from a prior session taught (one to two pages);
  • Copy of teaching certification.

TERMS:

Payment will be issued only for approved hours that have been properly documented and submitted. Failure to submit required timesheets may result in delayed payment or non-payment for unreported hours.

The hours listed below are estimates of the maximum approved hours available for each course assignment. Actual compensation will be based on hours worked reported and approved up to the maximum number of hours authorized for the assignment.

RETELL Instructor Course Hourly Compensation

Teaching Hours (3 hrs/session for 13 weeks): 39 hours

Prep/Grading Hours (2 hrs/session for 13 weeks): 26 hours

Total Maximum Hours: 65

Rate: BTU Hourly Rate - $59.39/hour

Total Maximum Compensation: $3860.35

Admin Course Hourly Compensation

Teaching Hours: 15 hours

Prep/Grading Hours (2 hrs/session for 5 weeks): 10 hours

Total Maximum Hours: 25

Rate: BTU Hourly Rate - $59.39/hour

Total Maximum Compensation $1484.75
