St. Stephens and St. Agnes School is seeking a dedicated and proactive Sports Fields and Facilities Technician to join the Buildings and Grounds (B&G) team at the Upper School campus in Alexandria Virginia. Reporting to the B&G Campus Supervisor the Sports Fields and Facilities Technician will play a vital role in ensuring the optimal condition and performance of the athletic fields by maintaining safe high-quality playing surfaces and facilities for various sports.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the day-to-day maintenance of athletic fields on the assigned campus.
  • Prepare athletic fields for practices and events ensuring a safe playing surface.
  • Mark and stripe fields according to sport-specific dimensions and regulations.
  • Mow and maintain turf grass to the specified height for athletic activities.
  • Implement aeration moisture control and top dressing to maintain collegiate-level sports field surfaces.
  • Apply fertilizers and nutrients to promote resilience and recovery to ensure turf health.
  • Monitor and adjust irrigation systems to maintain optimal soil moisture and ensure proper drainage to prevent waterlogging and ensure consistent playing conditions.
  • Manage turf areas to recover quickly from heavy use and adverse weather.
  • Implement pest management strategies to protect turf from insects and diseases.
  • Identify and control weeds using safe and effective methods.
  • Coordinates with outside contractors when necessary to address turf-related issues promptly.
  • Manages online work order management system requests related to athletic fields.
  • Schedules routine and annual safety and maintenance inspections.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between B&G and the Athletic Department meeting regularly and communicating proactively to coordinate field and facility maintenance seasonal transitions event preparation weather-related impacts closures repairs improvements and capital priorities.
  • Orders and maintains inventory of necessary maintenance supplies and equipment.
  • Assists with event set up and breakdown.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Note: The position may have opportunities to participate more directly in the schools athletics program. Willingness and ability to also coach an athletic team in the afternoons is valued. Coaching responsibilities would be compensated separately through the schools established coaching stipend structure.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of sports field construction turf varieties and athletic field specifications.
  • Proven experience in athletic field or turf grass maintenance.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to meet sport-specific field requirements.
  • Ability to operate and maintain specialized turf equipment.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines for athletic field maintenance including the safe use of equipment and chemicals.
  • Strong communication skills (oral and written) and ability to communicate effectively with individuals at varying levels.
  • Proficient with computers or related software as needed to complete reports logs and inventory.
  • Must be able to work occasional nights and weekends.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • At least 3 years of turfgrass maintenance experience is required.
  • Have mower mechanics skills to maintain equipment.
  • Drivers license.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to stand and walk extensive campus properties for prolonged periods of time and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Must be physically able to operate required equipment.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds at a time.
