Job Title: Special Education Instructional Coach

Reports to: Principal & Executive Director of Special Programs

Dept./School: Cunningham Elementary

Wage/Hour Status: Exempt

Pay Grade/Days: Teacher Pay Scale 187 days

Primary Purpose:
The Special Education Instructional Coach supports teachers and staff in delivering high-quality compliant and student-centered instruction for students receiving special education services. This role focuses on improving instructional practices strengthening IEP development and implementation and supporting effective behavior systems to ensure student success across specialized settings.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Bachelors degree in Special Education

Valid state teaching certificate with Special Education endorsement

Special Knowledge or Skills:

Demonstrated knowledge of IDEA-B MTSS and state-specific regulations

Experience writing and implementing IEPs conducting ARD/IEP meetings and supporting compliance

Training in evidence-based instructional frameworks

Professional development in behavior intervention AAC or assistive technology

Preferred Education & Credentials

Advanced certifications such as Educational Diagnostician LSSP/School Psychologist or Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA)

Reading or dyslexia-related certifications

Experience:

Three-5 years as a successful special education teacher

Major Responsibilities:

Instructional Support

  1. Provide job-embedded coaching to teachers through modeling co-teaching observation and feedback
  2. Support the implementation of research-based instructional strategies aligned to student IEP goals
  3. Assist teachers in designing differentiated instruction to meet diverse learning and behavioral needs
  4. Analyze student data with teachers to inform instructional decisions and progress monitoring

Professional Learning Communities (PLCs)

  1. Plan facilitate and support collaborative PLCs focused on student outcomes instructional practices and problem-solving
  2. Guide teams in using data to drive instruction and adjust supports for students
  3. Build teacher capacity through ongoing professional learning and reflective practices

IEP Development & Compliance

  1. Support teachers with IEP development documentation and progress monitoring to ensure compliance with state and federal requirements
  2. Provide guidance on aligning IEP goals with age appropriate standards and individualized student needs
  3. Assist with organization and completion of special education paperwork and timelines

Behavior Support

  1. Assist and support teachers in collecting and analyzing data related to the Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) process
  2. Collaborate with teachers to develop and implement effective behavior intervention plans (BIPs)
  3. Support staff in the continuous analysis of behavior data and the adjustment of interventions accordingly
  4. Provide coaching on proactive classroom management and de-escalation strategies

Collaboration & Leadership

  1. Partner with campus and district leaders to ensure alignment of instructional and compliance practices
  2. Serve as a resource and liaison between special education and general education staff
  3. Support onboarding and mentoring of new special education teachers

Skills & Competencies

  1. Strong interpersonal and coaching skills with the ability to build trust and support teachers and aides
  2. Understanding of differentiated instruction and inclusive practices
  3. Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail in compliance matters
  4. Ability to analyze data and translate it into actionable instructional plans
  5. Commitment to creating safe inclusive and high-expectation learning environments

Other

  1. Participate in staff development at the district regional and state level to enhance professional knowledge and skills.
  2. Stay informed and comply with all federal state district and campus regulations and policies relevant to deaf education
  3. Attend faculty meetings serve on committees and contribute to departmental collaboration.
  4. Compile and maintain all required records reports and documentation accurately and on schedule
  5. Maintain professional ethics and confidentiality regarding student information.

Maintain emotional control under stress.

Move small stacks of textbooks media equipment desk and other classroom or adaptive equipment.

May be required to support students physically during an emergency situation.

Should be able to work in an environment with children ages 3-5 years of age.
