Job Title: Senior Software Engineer Low Latency

Location: Chicago IL (Primary) / New York NY
Work Schedule: Hybrid 2 days onsite per week
Duration: 6-Month Contract

We are seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer Low Latency to design and engineer secure scalable and highly reliable technology solutions that support CMEGs global marketplace and critical risk management needs.

The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in high-performance computing low-latency application development concurrent programming networking JVM internals and Linux system internals. This role requires the ability to work independently with minimal mentoring while optimizing applications and systems for maximum throughput performance and reliability.

• Design develop and optimize secure scalable and highly reliable technology solutions.
• Focus on architecture and solution efficiency balancing performance capacity reliability and core system functionality.
• Identify opportunities for code optimization and performance improvement across applications and systems.
• Conduct and contribute to code reviews proactively identifying potential issues defects and performance bottlenecks.
• Troubleshoot application and system issues and help identify underlying sources of defects.
• Support environment builds application deployments release activities release notes and build notifications.
• Develop optimized application modules and comprehensive unit tests with minimal guidance.
• Understand and implement low-level designs within larger application architectures.
• Communicate and document system and architectural designs using appropriate design and modeling tools.
• Utilize low-level diagnostic and performance-analysis tools including packet capture tools and hardware performance counters to investigate system behavior and performance.
• Apply knowledge of modern multi-processor architectures to tune applications and systems for high throughput and ultra-low latency.
• Apply established software design patterns and contribute to engineering best practices standards and process improvements.
• Collaborate with engineering teams to identify and implement opportunities for improving application performance scalability and reliability.

• Strong ability to evaluate algorithms and data structures based on performance requirements and system constraints.
• Strong proficiency in:
  • Multithreading and concurrency
  • Concurrent data structures
  • Shared memory
  • Asynchronous programming
  • Java Native Interface (JNI)
  • Java NIO
  • HashMap and Java Collections
• Strong understanding of queue theory and various queue design and implementation strategies for optimizing system performance.
• Hands-on experience with networking protocols particularly TCP and UDP.
• Familiarity with redundancy resiliency and fault-tolerance techniques.
• Experience with application and system performance tuning for high-throughput and low-latency environments.
• Familiarity with JVM internals and garbage collection tuning.
• Advanced knowledge of Linux operating system and kernel internals.
• Strong understanding of modern multi-core and multi-processor system architecture.

Experience or knowledge in the following areas is highly desirable:

• EFVI
• Solarflare Onload / Onload Extension APIs
• Advanced JNI usage
• Thread pinning and CPU affinity
• Interrupt handling and optimization
• CPU/core isolation
• Jitter reduction and latency optimization
• NUMA architecture
• TLB and CPU cache behavior
• Low-level hardware and operating-system performance analysis
• Experience optimizing applications for high throughput and deterministic low latency

The ideal candidate is a hands-on senior engineer who understands systems from the application layer down to the operating system and hardware level. They should be comfortable analyzing performance bottlenecks optimizing concurrent applications working with network protocols and using low-level tools to identify and resolve latency and throughput issues.

Strong problem-solving skills attention to performance characteristics and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision are essential
